i hav a mk1 gti 1.8 8v, but is dead. i also hav a fully workin 2.0 8v engine from a mk3 gti.
i was wondering how hard is it to put the 2.0 into the mk1. and is it difficult. i heard that the engine mounts are different.
-
Yes engine mounts are different but easy enough to do the conversion.
-
yeah just swap the mounts over from the old engine, use old gearbox + flywheel and fit a new clutch kit.
how good are you at wiring?
-
im ok with wiring. wot is the best way of going abowt the engine mounting situation?
iive got all the parts from both cars too.
will the mk1 gti 1.8 box go straight on the 2.0 lump?
cheers
-
and the inner wing engine mount near the timing belt looks different. (i havent yet compared engines side by side yet)
there are 3 holes on the 2.0 engine near the timing belt, i want 2 know if these have to be modiefied or changed in anyway?
-
you remove the original mount off the gti lump and bolt it on to the new 2.0 lump exactly where you said. :)
-
wot abowt the wiring looms? wot do i need to do bowt that! lol.
-
you'll need to use the mk3 loom, and i believe there will be some splicing into the mk1 loom involved too.
dont quote me on that though as im not great when it comes to wiring em up!
-
you could run it onthe original managment but you would have to swap a MK1/2 GTI head onto it. for the MK3 loom you will need to collect some wiring diagrams and strip out all the non-essential bits from the engien loom, then splice it to your fusebox.

ok thanks lads. il will leave the wiring 2 sum1 who is gud at it.(im ok with ICE but nt engine electrics lol)
