i have a mk4 .. and im looking to get 6x9s and seperate tweeters for the rear shelf.. but im in confusion which is the better company for these alpines or sony?? as i will also be getting a matching amplifier :undecided:????
also what rms and max power whould i be looking at as they are all averaging like 150-200 max power.. i was thinking something more powerful as that would give me better sound??
-
Apline all the way...sonys are renowed for 'tiny' sound
-
arent the standard speakers in mk4 gti sony??
-
yep I believe so but either way I would change them as they used to crackle at certains pitchs with even my baby 12" fli amp and sub! If you wanna stick to sony be prepared to pay a fair bit but yes longer lasting. I have used mainly kenwood stereo, apline or what I have now pioneer f900bt HU which makes a HUGE difference, changed my cabling for the sound and not bothered with an amp or sub just yet and blimey what a sound! Surround sound esp when watching James bond dvd in the car woohoo!
-
to be honest only company i ever used is alpine never touched nothing else.. but there 6x9s are very limited..there amps are out of this wolrd tho .. and the new 6x9s are bollocks as my mates got em an they dont have the punch as the old skool ones :undecided:
-
go into halfords and have a look at the clearance stuff as the new stuff out aint a huge difference between them to be really honest. Or try fusion? Near enough same as apline but not as good but a dam sight better than sony. I feel sony are overrated and over priced!! They make TV's, cameras, etc and apline well are just pure sound!!
-
yh alpine is king in ICE ... be honest i would not touch fusion and stuff with a 10 metre pole.. my mate loves his subwoofer stuff  and hes blown god knows how many crapy make subs and speakers.. now hes finally brought proper alpine system and its sweet and fookin load
alpine is pretty expensive too tho . but you pay for the quality not just name with them so agree with you there
-
I had Sony 3 way 6x9's and loved em!
But have taken them out now. Have an Alpine based system but dont rate their speakers!
Better off with Infinity or JBL's
-
what model sonys did you have mate??
-
In my opinion I would say alpine are not the kings better vfm out there as Len said infinity or jbl.
I had a fusion system & hit 143db with 1 12" so I wouldn't say they are that crap. Also I would never, ever, ever buy any kit from halfords. Overpriced sh!t IMHO.
Get youself on caraudiodirect or caraudiosecurity.
Why do you want 6x9s?
Also if you get 6x9s you won't need extra tweeters as all 6x9 full range speakers are 2 or 3way so have tweeters built in.
Max power ratings are made up numbers put there to sell to people who don't know what to look for. Only ever use rms ratings when judging a speaker or amps power.
Higher rms doesn't mean it will sound better just louder.

wikid thanks for the info seen a few alpine 6x9's but they all got crappy rms like 60-80 im looking more to 100+ .. dont wanna spend sh!t loads tho mx around £50

went in road radio the other day, after some alpine componants for my friend, man in shop said,,, he had some other ones, same spec as alpine but only £70 and no £240 lol!, ill try and find out what these was!
and as for 6x9 ? WHY! :)
think of a concert no sound comes from the rear?? so why in your car :) good/decent componont speekers with tweeters rudding off a decent amp! :) 100% better than 6x9's! :)

quiet happy with standard set up at the mo just wanted extra mid sound.. was thinking maybe some 6 1/2 scomponent speakers with some alpine tweeters in shelf???

Again IMHO front comps up front & sub in boot (whether it be 100wrms 8" or 10,000wrms 15"). Both amped, setup & installed correctly will give you a very sweet sounding setup.
Standard hu & standard speakers will probably be around 10-15wrms. So a 60w comp & amp setup will be a whole lot louder than the standard ones. You don't need masses of power to the midrange speakers.
Are you looking at getting a sub later on?
It's a good idea to look into sound deadening the doors. You could also look into maybe fiberglassing the back of the speaker pod & strengthening around the speaker. This will help give a clear prominent midbass.
A speaker cone moves back & forth. Now if the thing the speaker is attached to is moving as well this is movement the cone looses hence lost sound.
For budget speakers again as Len said infinity & jbl are good or if you can stretch the budget a bit entry cdt's are cracking.
What are your long term plans for your system?
What equipment do you already have?

got standard VW setup at the mo which is pretty load for standard speakers and has got very good bass..its set on 0 and still will rattle the car .. not looking to put a sub in mate as not fan of em.. like my mid and tweeter sounds
-
I'd say then amped comps up front & do everything you can to improve the sound.
Sound deadened & sealed pods then.
I was quite impressed with the standard golf system in my mk3, but once you've got hu, amp & comps in there you won't be sorry.
-
thanks for advice will have a snoop.. gonna pop down bass junkies on monday see what they got to offer
-
dont bother with 6x9`s waste of time if you ask me i`ve only ever had one se and they where caliber. had them for a week and the decided didnt like them. they left whooping holes in my shelf which wasnt to bad because it was a stealth install so it wasnt seen. but i wen for upgrading my orginal speakers got a better sound and if you think about it there in the place that they were ment to be in no cutting or hacking. if your going bass junkies be im not sure if they do them anymore but have a look at mb quarts or jl`s
-
managed get some alpine door speakers and fli tweeters brand new for £40!

The best thing to do when buying speakers is to have a listen. The way it sounds to you, might not be the way someone else likes it.
Definitely improve the fronts and leave out the 6x9s.

yh they should sound good ..alpine
gonna get alpine amplifier now to go with it
-
Sorry if this sounds a bit harsh but why?????
You bought 2 way coaxs. If you look at those speakers the little thing that sticks out of the front of the speaker is a little tweeter. So it is basically 2 speakers in one.
You've then bought another set of tweeters. When you buy components you have crossovers that come with them to seperate the signals that each speaker receives.
Each crossover for each set of components is designed for the set of speakers it comes with.
How do you intend to setup the speakers you have just bought?
-
lost me
brought em main reason they where very cheap.. also becuase my passanger side speaker has popped so hence i need to change them..
(not gonna do nothing in the shelf as originaly i said becuase of this)
.. im gonna just replace them with these and put tweeters on my pillers (gonna leave original tweeters in as normal) and hook it all up to a 4 channel alpine 400w amp i have brought too
-
Mate I would strongly suggest components, I currently have CDT components running off a mission amp and good lord it's literally like the band playing are on your dashboard, you can hear every little sound they are absolutly amazing and I aint exagerating (SP)
I've had infinity speakers with additional tweeter and to be honest mate they didn't sound too great, the main reason is because they don't go through a crossover there will always be a slight delay in the sound, you may not notice that there is a delay vut you may notice that it sounds a bit weird and won't be able to put your finger on what it is that is causing the it to sound like that but that is what it is. The tweeter only a has a bass blocker in the wire which some may say also cause a very slight delay.
But all in all the price you have paid and what your getting for so little money is quite well done.
-
For 6"9's I would strongly recommend Infinity Kappa series, they actually have a seperate crossover rather than the crappy built in one's, they sound amaingly clear but not that much depth in bass at all, their more for clarity than anything else, well the mid was good on them.
-
thanks asif for info .. and yh i did get a bargian!
iv put the alpines in the front doors and now got some sony 3 way speakers in the shelf and fli tweeters in the doors too.. replaced standard ones as they where crap and had a little restrictor thing on em .. sounds fookin awesome now.. oh and also got a alpine amp running em
i love the sound now.. perfect for my liking i can finally put the bass up from the headunit
-
The main thing is that your happy with the sound, so job well done in that sense.
-
hey asif where you get the cdt`s from ? ics ?
