Im going to pick up my VR6 engine next thursday for my conversion.
The guy who has it reckons that even with an engine hoist it will still take some moving, as its the engine, gearbox, subframe, hubs, suspension etc all still together.
I know its a guess question, but what would you say the total rough weight of that would be? And would a hoist be able to lift it, as somehow i have to get it from the pallet its sitting on, to the trailer im taking it on home.
Has anyone had any experience with moving and transporting something as big and heavy as this?

If its on a pallet how about a pallet truck?
Pure guess 150 - 200 kgs

If the vr6 as a car weighs 1250kg surely the engine, gearbox, subframe, hubs, steering rack, suspension, would weigh more than 200kgs? or maybe not? If it only weighs that than an engine hoist should move it no problems.
Thought about a pallet truck, but that would mean i need to take a trailer that i could wheel it onto.

take the gearbox off and remove engine from subframe, only a few bolts and it'll make it a hell of a lot easier to move

That whole lot in one go is going to be over 200kgs.
02a gearbox's are heavy on their own, the hub assemblies with discs and calipers are heavy, let alone the block and head. Engine without gearbox is going to be about 150kgs.
Be careful of hernia's, I understand its not nice when your bowels are poking out of your pelvis or scrotum :sick: :grin:

Well i think the engine hoist my father has is a 1tonne hoist, so that should more than suffice, think the seller is just being a bit paranoid!

Hoist will pick it all up easily. Only issue you may have is how high you can lift it compared to how high your trailer is. If it won't go high enough, you'll have to go for the swing and drop technique, which can be interesting :lipsrsealed:

Swing and drop sounds like an awesome idea, possibly just let the trailer tyres down if its still now low enough...
Sure i will be able to work something out. At least i know that the whole lot isnt really that heavy.
If the engine itself only comes in at about 150kgs then that helps with my choice of engine stand to put it on, whilst i play with it :)

Bare block with nothing on it at all is only around 30kg as I have picked on up before, complete lump would be around 150

I was thinking along the lines that I have picked up an engine, so plus a box and the subframe etc.
I recall the old bags of cement used to be 112lbs approx 50kgs and I used to carry those around no problem!
I suggested the pallet truck because you said it was on a pallet and you were trailering it home!
somehow i have to get it from the pallet its sitting on, to the trailer im taking it on home.

Firstly, I'm sorry. Do you have a boat for which you need an anchor?
A 1tonne engine crane should be fine. Make sure you have shackles and a chain, or a lap belt with which to lift the motor etc. At least VAG motors have lifting eyes on them, generally. Keep the chain/strap short on the motor and you should be able to get it well over a metre in the air.
