Cars look good... but advert is... how can I put it nicely... "a bit gay...". Kinda "Top Gun" meets "Priscilla Queen of the Desert".

I've never seen anything as queer in my whole life

When the drivers gaze at each other through open windows it is so camp it might just be a deliberate spoof.
Put me off the scirocco R for life. And the Golf just looks boring.
-
A tad camp to say the least!
I think they both look pretty mean - but I'm leaning towards the Golf
-
OK, anyone heard the engine/exhaust sound of the new Golf/Scirocco R? Well, you can.
Go here: www.r-level.de (http://www.r-level.de)
Click "Seite offnen".
Click "Uberspringen" to skip the camp movie.
Click "Level Themen Zeigen".
Then "Downloads".
Choose "02 Kraft" in the Downloads pop-up.
Click "Motorensound".
Turn up your speakers.
So - what do you think? Certainly doesn't have have sense of occasion of the VR6.
-
Weird ad but I'm liking the Golf R, the Scirocco doesn't grow on me imho it just get uglier the more I see it.
-
Could you honestly spend £28k (which is what the Press are saying this R will be) on a Golf, no matter how good it's supposed to be?
I certainly couldn't. You're well into far more prestigious marques territory at that point.
Silly money and I think they (VW) are taking the p*ss to be honest.

Agreed!!!

Maybe thats the market segment VW is going for
-
Maybe. But it'll get to the point where they suddenly find people will stop buying the cars. That "prestige" saloon they made springs to mind - the Phaeton. Yes, good car but are you seriously going to buy that over a Jag, Beemer, Merc etc. etc. etc?
Er, no.

Yup, easily.

Like what?
The S3?
What else has the subtlety, build, performance and precticality? Apart from the S3?

135i + fun factor
135i + long visit to Specsavers!
Uness it's a coupe...but then you loose practicality.

It would have to be the coupe.. I wasnt even aware they did the hatch with the same engine :undecided:
Regardless of what people think the 1 series is better quality than the golf and very few mods will have you pushing nearly 400bhp from a car the size of a golf with RWD... a tool indeed
Much rarer sight that a golf also

Me. I love the Phaeton and if I were rich enough to be buying a car in that segmant it's the one I'd buy hands down over the others.

I think looks are always down to personal opinion. I definately wouldnt say its better looking that the golf... but once your in the car who cares what the outside looks like anyway

They quite possibly don't...I've never looked at the hatch...only the coupe.
Nice car...stonking engine...but not for me - just too impractical for an everyday car - I need to fetch the shopping in it remember!

The RWD is a problem for me, as an everyday car too.
Too much snow and frost...
Much rarer sight that a golf also
True.
Some nice colour combinations too - interior and exterior...the Mk6 Golf / 'rocco seems to have a pretty poor colour choice...and an even worse interior choice, considering the money!
Why can't you have Viper Green paint on a Scirocco with Truffle leather?
If I'm paying £28k+ I want to decide...not VW!
Why don't VW offer a grey leather option for the Mk6, as they did the Mk5?

You would also need to be rich enough to not give a stuff what it's worth 2 years down the line - in the case of the Phaeton, not much - about £13.47 and some piocket fluff is the best offer you'll get!
I like the car though...buy a 12-18 month old one and let some other fool take it in the ass for depreciation.

Yeah I know about the loss you'll make but TBH if you can afford a car in that sector those sorts of things are not likely to play heavily on your mind, ha ha.
There are a couple in Reading that I see every now and again and they have a really solid and imposing road presence and yet are subtle enough to blend in with the daily traffic.

mmmmm that Rocco R looks the sh!z
The Golf R still doesn't look 'aggressive' enough :undecided:
Phaeton = Suped Passat imho  I see one quite often in/near Wally and really don't see the point of it :undecided:
It probably hasn't sold as well as others because it's a newer model and doesn't have quite the same presence/name in the 'circles' of prestige saloon owners, praps if they advertised it more than the Passat it would sell better?
-

Thats the problem right there. If you can afford a car in this sector your simply going to go for the one that costs the most/has the most toys/is voted the best/goes the fastest etc etc.
Unfortunately as good as that car is... its none of those things :undecided:

Meh, I still like it and would rather drive that than some cock extension from Merc or BMW.
Didn't Clarkson rate it but said it had no hope becuase of the badge?
As a luxury car – as a machine for going quickly and comfortably in sepulchral silence – the Phaeton is better than any of its rivals from Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Maserati.

It just needs that 'prestige' badge, VW will struggle to shake the "Audi's cheaper Cousin" 'branding' amongst the prestige car buyers.

Im not one to jump on a band wagon.. although clarkson was probably right.. but if it wasn't my money I would probably go for the A8 to be alittle different. Having been in all of those above except the maserati i would opt for the BMW. It was the best out of the lot mentioned.... it was that simple for me
