Had a major oil leakage!
A fair amount has got into the alternator! Will this cause any real damage?

a garage told me once when oil was leaking into my alternator that is would burn it out? not sure of the truth in that statement though lol

How soon?

sorry bud, lol
i know when i got it in my head to rub the old mine alternator down to get a shiny look with wire wool i got all the bits of metal in the coils - it only lasted a month after that!!
-
Oh well will see how soon it goes bang then!
-
be reet, just repeat that several times and it be reet!

I used to service alternators, starters and even dynamo's (showing my age) used to clean all parts with petrol, if your not confident about stripping it to clean properly, try pouring petrol over it, cold stationary engine and no smoking to thin the oil leave overnight for petrol to evaporate. Not garenteed but may help.

How soon?
within the next 6 weeks as a guess.

i know oil can make the burshes fail quite quickly but thats about it.
on some of the kit i used to work on it come in with the alternators dripping with oil, if i felt uber keen they'ed get thrown in the parts washer whole and some new brushes, other times they got left till the charge light started to flick then they just got new brushes

All good so far, will keep ya posted.
Hope it does last 6 weeks Wayne!
