Oh u probably got the Mk 3 "disease" then mate.

Try the relays - cutting out is the fuel pump relay i think.

Don't forget the basics.  When it happened to me, I thought I'd be cleaning out fuel system components and changing relays, but after I changed the plugs, oil and filters (oil, air, fuel and even pollen!), it's been fine.

Jus got in from work!!
thanx for the response  ;D. i'm gonna try the relay first (?7.51 from euro car parts), then if it carries on then i'll do a mini service. Well according to the service book, it had a 10k service (dont know what that involves) about 1500 miles ago. Oh by the way, where is the rely located (i know it sounds stupid, i havent looked for them yet).

once again thanx

Numerous cures for this problem as it could be numerous things!! (do a search for previous topics). Initial problem on mine was cured by replacing relay 30 (hall sender relay..I think). Stalling when approaching traffic lights was cured by a can of powerboost cleaner in the throttle bodies. Try these first as relatively cheap fixes. www.ecotekplc.co.uk.

This might help:

It might be best to replace everything if it costs IRO ?60 to get a diagnostic check, plus, you will have brand new electrics ready for winter.

Have you managed to change Relay 30 yet and have you cleaned out the throttle body? The problem with my '97 P was that it would cut out intermittently and not restart- Relay 30 cured this. Later on it would cut out when slowing down in traffic jams or when coming to a stop and dipping the clutch, by spraying the throttle body with powerboost foam (www.ecotekplc.co.uk) cured this problem and it has been fine for about 9 months...give it a go as it doesnt cost a lot

The problem you are having is the common GOLF MK3 Syndrome.

Basicly, as your slowing down or changing to a lower/higher gear. Your car drops revs and sometimes cuts out.

I had the same problem once. The fix for this is NOT the relay number 30 switch. It is to simply clean the throttle body with some carb cleaner. The best way to do this is to go to your nearest garage and just ask can you unclip and claen the throttle body. Its a 2 minute job.

Why this happens with the Golf MK3?

Because Golf Mk3 Haven`t got a cat flap filter like most cars.

Sumthin that happened to me at the weekend. Did an oil check and noticed that the breather hose from the inlet manifold had come away from the air filter and a elbow piece had fallen off.
As a temporary repair i put gaffer tape over the hole in the filter and the end of the hose. It didnt like that! Just cut out. So took the tape off the hose and it was fine.

So the moral here is - yes it could be air flow causing the cut out.

I think i've cured it? :D , on friday i got ready to take off the? pipe flowing from the air box to the throttle body, with the engine running i revved? the engine & i could hear a hissing noise. I took the pipe off and statred it back up, revved it a few times without the pipe on. then put the pipe back on. since then i didn't hear the hissing sound when i rev it & it hasn't cut out yet.

So hopefully it should be ok, i'll keep you posted.

Thanks.
