Don't know if this applies to the Mk6 but when the Mk5 was lauched I remember reading an article where they did a comparison of the GTI with 17's and 18's. The car on 17's posted quicker lap times.

So, in summary. The 17" are much cheaper, more comfortable, cheaper tyres and faster.

Some think the monza shadows look better - matter of opinion of course.  :undecided:
Any other advantages of the monza shadows apart from cosmetic?

Just for info..

ha ha ha my vote goes for the 18"s... aren't looks the main reason we get nice rims in the end? Aren't the 18s supposed to embody the GTI signature?

Due to the pollished/lac finish to the monza shadows they will suffer in long term use to the dreaded white worm/corrosion issues were the lac lifts and leaves white paches. The painted finish to the 17s are a much longer term solution.

But from past experience on car forums alot of owners are after looks so go for the shadows/monza IIs or simply don't keep there car long enought to worry about it or don't use it as it should be and spend most there time cleaning it and keeping it locked up in a garage lol.

I went in the end for the 17s for a couple of reaaons. 1) I have a set of monza IIs from our mk5 that i can use if i want (put it back on the 17s to save the wheels from out lass!) and i much prefer there classy look of the monza II to the more halfords aftermarket barryboys looking shadows. *all my personal opinion. 2) I also fancy a set of scirocco wheels alot its just the different offset and 0.6" sticking firther out/maybe handling issues that brings it keeping me from them.

At the moment it's looking like the 17" wheels are the 'special ones' while the 18" are the 'common ones'.

Its as i expected, similar to the mk5 vote many years ago.
Oh and i voted other as i really like the scirocco wheels on the GTI :smug:

it'll be interesting to see how many got for the "other" option.

could be a choice in a few years time when the monza shadows are badly corroded.

anyone got any pics of interesting "other" options they can post up?

lol! I voted for the "other" option! my reason because i'll swap them for 19" BBS CX-R once I get mine! with KW variant 3 to lower it!

As I said earlier, I voted 17" as keeping the car for a while, but if I do decide to change them, further down the line, it will be for "other". I do like Frogti's wheels.

Thank God for car warranty ehh...

3 years time + white worm = brand spanking rims  .  Considering I change my car every 3 -4 year this wont be an issue for me.

My vote goes for the 18's, no comparison over the 17's.  I do like FroGTI's rims though

I voted for the ''otter''.

If I bought a new GTI I would have ordered it with Shadows, I love the way the sun (two days a year) and streetlights catch the machined faces of the wheels.

But I didn't end up getting a brand new car for many reasons, I got the most basic spec ex demo I could find (again for many reasons) with the 17s on.

I have a nice set of BBSs off my mk5 sat waiting to go on the car as soon as I've got the time/money to sort a couple of new tyres. Just like the Scirocco wheels, the BBSs are slightly wider and have a lower offset to fill the arches much better than the ET51 of the standard wheels.
I know many on here will say that the BBSs have been done to death on the mk5 (just like Monzas!) but I like 'em and they have sentimental value. Just a pain in the arse to clean.

Get some bilberry wheel cleaner then put a wax on once they are clean. Brake dust just washes off with water in future.

Cool, ta. Who does bilberry cleaner (sorry, not into detailing so a bit thick on the subject)?
I gave them a good few coats or Mer after they came off the mk5 though to go into storage and they're gleaming at present. May have to leave the 17s on until next Spring. Nah, maybe not.

Even though I voted for Monza II I quite the look of Samarkand. Very close in look of Frogs Interlagos.

Well, I do like the 18s.  Just not £480 "like".

First, you actually can't see which wheels are on the car when it's moving.  So when I flash past you, leaving you in the dust, you're not going to know.

Second, the 17s are supposed to perform better - smoother ride, and allegedly a smidgin faster.

Third, white worm.  I intend to be talked into disposing of my clapped-out car in 12 or 13 years time, just as with the Peugeot (and thank you for the £2000, Gordon).  I do not want white worm hassle.

Fourth, you can't even see them when you're driving it, and I just don't get off on admiring my car's wheels while it's parked, for some reason.

Fifth, £480.

Rolfe.

18'' bbs ch for me,well sort of.Got edition 30 alloys on my mk5 GTI.I must be one of the few on here who doesn't like the Monza in either 17'' 0r 18'' version.

Other. The telephone dial Monzas do nothing for me. I'd specify the 18's for resale value or to sell on at a profit, then fit some 19's - probably BBS or the wheels from the R or an Audi or something.

Don't worry, you ain't alone! Our frog went to some lengths to avoid them & ended up with a far better looking car imho, and I can't stand the damn things either. But if I end up changing, it'll probably be for a set of bbs "style" (ie cheaper copies that I'll care less when I curb the flicking things ).
