Just wondering if anyone had specced folding mirrors on their Golf - and how are they?
The ones on the MK5 were pretty poop... in that they only came in a tiny bit! Are the MK6 ones better?
Do you still need to press a button to make them fold - or does it do it automatically when you lock the car?
-
They're ok and fold in quite a way but a real pain as they don't do it automatically, you have to turn the rotary switch. Dunno why they decided to do it like that - must be an easy thing to make it automatic......
-
i like them a lot, the come in much more than on the mk5. it is a bit of a pain doing it manually but defo worth having imo. i also like when you put the car into reverse and then put the dial to L it moves the mirror on the left side down so that you can see if you're going to kerb your wheels or not! i would say they are worth having given the number of plums who can't park these days and who are likely to take a chunk out of your mirrors.
-
They are pretty good ,they fold in quite a long way and is ideal when in a narrow parking space,as for the switch i suppose it gives you a choice,i was hoping there was a switch because i did`nt want it to automatically close them when you switched the car off(if only for when you are taking pictures of the car)
-
Can you fold them on the move for improved aerodynamics  - no seriously!?
-
If the mirrors folded automatically when the ignition was switched off, then presumably they would unfold when the ignition was switched back on. Perhaps not such a great idea if, like me, you park in a garage with a narrow doorway. I want those mirrors out of the way when I'm reversing out

Lol, I tried that a coupl of days ago on the motorway. I don't know about affecting top speed, but it did reduce wind noise slightly

the mirror goes into auto kerb view in reverse on mine and i don' have folding mirrors as a option

Didn't know I could get my left mirror to dip while reversing on the gti. Any idea which settings I need to activate to do this?
-
make sure you have the option ticked in the mfd, turn your mirror adjuster to position L, select reverse (but don't actually reverse) then adjust mirror to your required view then select back to neutral. So now when you select reverse the mirror should return automaticaly to the position you selected when in reverse as long as L is selected on mirror adjuster.
-
don't seem to have the option on the mfd. I don't have folding mirrors, could that be why?

 lol, me either as they don't fold completely on lock and unlock thought I'd rather spend the dosh on keeping my a57e warm in the winter. At my age warmth is far more important than if the bloody mirrors fold in or out automatically!!!

I dont have folding mirrors either although i have the option on my MFD but cant get it to work
-
Do you have the luxury pack?
-
No luxury pack. That's probably why!
-
 i don't have lux pack but its in my mfd
-
one poor thing is that the ignition seems to have to be on (or at least the key in) in order for the mirrors to work. a bit of pain really. i love cars where the mirrors and windows still work even without the key in.
-
Do the windows not work with the keys if you hold the button in?
-

Same here
-
i dont have lux pack either and i can get it in my mfd but i was told this is because i have the parking sensors and camera

Hmmm... I have neither of those options yet its in my MFD, strange

Personally, even in a narrow garage entrance I would want the mirrors out. It conditions you to manoeuvring the car more accurately, and if you happen to make a mistake, with the mirrors out you are probably better off being alerted to the sound of a banged mirror than the sound of a banged door panel. (mirrors are easier and cheaper to fix than doors, right?) Plus the mirrors are useful to see that there is still actually gap left between the garage entrance made of unforgiving solid brick and the side of the car which is made from [relatively] soft steel.
Having said that I guess it would depend on how wide the entrance is compared to the car: if with the mirrors folded out it doesn't fit, then obviously you wouldn't want to break the mirrors... :undecided: Just my 2p.

That is exactly the point!
I had a Focus as a hire car once (only had 4 miles on the clock when I picked it up, and I got nicked for speeding approximately 20 minutes later, you can't win). Anyway, I was visiting my mother at the time, and made sure to put the car in the garage because I didn't want any of the locals getting any ideas. Its automatically-folding mirrors were a pain in the neck.
First, I had to fold them manually in order to get into the garage in the first place. Then, when I started the car, still in the garage, the damn mirrors promptly unfolded. The last thing I wanted. So the first thing I had to do before I moved off was fold them again. Then once I was out, unfold them.
I was really keen to find out if there was a way to disable the automatic mirror folding, but I only had the car for a few days. I'd forgotten all about that till I started reversing the new GTi into my garage, and remembered the hassle. (What I hadn't figured was that for reversing in, I need the mirrors to get the car properly lined up. So I have to wait till I'm almost at the doorway before switching them to fold!) Then of course they're folded for me to drive out, and once I'm in the driveway, I just turn the switch again. Perfect.
Automatic folding is a really silly idea, not until they develop something that will automatically sense a garage door coming up.
(Reminds me of a brain-dead feature on my XR2. If you opened the driver's door with the headlights on, it squawked annoyingly at you. All the time you were opening the gate or whatever. There was no way to stop it, short of disabling the feature entirely. I complained and I moaned that, very useful though it was, I only wanted it to do that when the engine was switched off! I did not want it to do it every time I nipped out of the car for a minute after dark - for example to open a gate. But nobody could fix it. The designers must gave been really stupid. One of the reasons I got rid of the car after only 5 years and bought the Peugeot, which was a bit more rational.)
Rolfe.
ETA: Imagine parking very very close to a wall, having manually folded the mirrors to do that. Then you get back in and switch the ignition on - and your nearside mirror unfolds smack into the wall! I can see why they wouldn't have it as an option.

That would have probably been a very easy fix. A simple relay would have sorted it  too late now lol.

Too late by 16 years!
Rolfe.
-
can you manually fold the mirrors even if you have the lux pack with electric folding? I'm thinking if I popped out that car, forgot to fold them with the dial and just wanted to push them in?
-
Dunno, haven't tried.
Rolfe.
ETA: Have now. Yes.

ETA again: Come to think of it, of course you can. It wouldn't do for them to stay rigid if they got a knock from a passing vehicle while the car was parked.

So got my GTD today and it has the folding mirrors. So before I go into this don't get me wrong because I think the car is great ! However I would have preferred it if the mirrors could be set to fold automatically, purely and simply because where I park I have to have them folded.
Our (well my wife's actually) other car is and Audi Q5 which in the settings on MFD gives you the option to either automatically or manually fold them - the best of both worlds.
Have to say manual folding isn't end of the world, but would be simpler to have the option me thinks !
