Title: Locating a blowing exhaust?
Post by: Mr.Tom on 16 September 2009, 20:14
I can hear the exhaust blowing somewhere. Have been underneath and checked all the pipes/joints/seals I can get to.
So I was checking the down pipe and found what seems to be some gas escaping from somewhere around the joint between the engine and the gear box. It feels like it is coming from the opposite direction towards the pipe, so am at a bit of a loss.
Is there a sure fire way of finding out where it is coming from? Thought about soapy water, but it would evaporate too quickly, and not sure I want to be dumping it onto hot metal, in case of damage.
Can't quite see the area it seems to be coming from either :/

Sorry, forgot to say it is a Mk3 96 2.0 GTi. Not sure of engine code yet.

bit of tissue paper, move it around till you see it flapping about,. should help pinpoint it :)

A mate to put hand over the exhaust outlet will make it blow out the hole more!
