Title: RNS-510 - entering code?
Post by: p3eps on 13 September 2009, 20:22
I'm trying to get a good priced RNS-510 off eBay just now.  My car isn't here yet, and mose eBay suppliers give 10 - 30 day money back guarantees - so I want to test it as soon as I get one.

I know I can power it up using a 12V supply, and I found a diagram of the Pin Outs... so I know where to connect my Pos / Neg.

All the suppliers give the units supplied with a code car - obviously which I would want to test also.

Can anyone confirm whether I need to enter the code whilst just powering the unit - or is it only when its connected through the CanBus that it needs the code?

Cheers...

I'll answer my own question incase anyone is interested!

If you connect pin 12 to negative, and pins 15 & 16 to 12V positive, the device asks you for a code when you switch it on.
I had to get an extra powerful PSU though, as the RNS-510 needs 2.50+ amps to run - most stereos run happily <2.00 amps!

Ebay yes... It was £510 all in.  Almost immaculate - with a few hairline marks on the shiney bezel bit.  You don't see them unless you look for them though.  Screen is perfect.
Seems like a good deal since VW want about £1600 for one!
