Title: Exhaust note
Post by: R32UK on 13 September 2009, 15:15
Now i have to say i have been a little dissapointed with the exhaust note since I got the car, but i guess this is also down to not going over 3000revs 4000revs 5000revs ok if Im honest 5500revs but yesterday on a longer motorway journey i noticed that the exhuast is now sounding a little different.

A little more fruity shall we say... anyone else notice the note changing over time???

Can't say I've noticed it changing, but I enjoy its 'V8 growl' at low revs - when pulling away from a standstill, for instance.

I`ve noticed mine is getting deeper it kind of growls more at high revs now,for instance i over took a car on the way back from wales on friday there was a group of young farmers standing on the back of a trailer in a lay by just chewing the fat when i opened up the golf they all span around to look

as far as common sense dictates - only v8 engines produce a v8 growl.

no need to avoid the question or state the obvious. At what point did he say his golf has a V8?

Dont know about V8 but when i change gear at full chat with the DSG it makes the coolest sound, also a few mates who i have given a lift have commented on the sound being mean.

It probably depends if the person who thinks it sounds like a V8 has ever actually heard a V8!

Good grief, lighten up, lads. I used the term 'V8 growl' to refer to the deep burble you get at low rvs, as opposed to the scream you get at high revs. Believe it or not, it DOES remind me of my old e39 M5.

I realised that the growl has changed after passing the 3k kilometre mark. It sounds more refine and smooth... More mature... like a wonderfully aged wine...

My GTi is v v v quiet. Sounds nothing like the videos I've seen on the web. ASked the garage and they said there's nothing wrong and it should loosen up a bit with time (it's done 1500 miles). Their demo cars sound much meatier but they said it's because they get thrashed whenever they get taken out. I'm not sure...

Thats my point. Mine was sounding very quiet but a good run on the motorway has helped it along a little. i just hope it does so a little more, as the demo i tested only had 7miles on the clock but got a good seeing to thanks to the dsg :lipsrsealed: and sounded alot nicer

Yup, after my roadtrip to Germany, the car has sounded different. It now sounds meatier even at lower revs. You cant get a decent run in in the Netherlands as the speed limit is 120km/h... In Germany, its better as you can pace yourself and vary your rpm... So once you people get your new cars, go to Germany... its a driver's dream to drive there... beautiful scenery and German beer! :)

Mine actually sounds a lot louder than i would have expected.  Pretty quiet below 1.5k, but above that there's a nice rorty sound.  On start up sounds a little diesel like if i'm honest!!

I had read this and was relieved to discover my GTI doesn't sound like a diesel at all. However, I recently had the chance to drive my brother-in-law's Audi TT 2.0 TFSI for a couple of days (same engine as the MkV GTI) and that did sound like a diesel for a second or two on start-up. During normal driving, however, it made almost no noise at all; very disappointing compared to my GTI.

I am beginning to wonder from reading this post if each car isn't tuned differently (although I can't see why VW would do this).

Thats just it the VAG 2.0tsfi (fsi) engine does sound like a diesel on start up... all most to the point of being embarassing :embarassed:

So does the 1.8T...my S3 sounded like a tractor on start up.
But, no matter how bad you 'think' it sounds, it doesn't actually sound as bad as a 1.9 PD...I can assure you.

Or as bad as the PD MK5 2.0 TDI engine, especially when it was cold. I sware I will never drive a derv again, ever!

I thought the newer 2.0 TDIs were better?
The 170 PD certainly is, as is the 170 CR.

Can't see me wanting another TDI either though...just too damn noisy.

Why should they?  All EU-specific GTIs, be they left or right hookers, will have an identical state of tune.  The only differences regarding the actual sound they make is simply down to how they are run.  Most direct injection petrol engines seem to run rich, and if you drive it like an old granny, then the exhaust silencers will get clogged up with soot.  But give em a good blast, and they will sound different.
