Title: clutch foobard or just the cable?
Post by: Dolly on 13 September 2009, 10:53
just secured a 88 E reg 8v Gti. its digifant not that makes a difference to the gearbox i suppose..

basically the clutch bite point is right near the top of the pedal, ive looked under the bonnet and it appears to have the manual adjusting cable. just before the pivot arm piece on the gearbox, the cable has a thread with what looks like nuts at either end. (albeit rusty)
Is it just a case of adjusting it to change the bite point, or do i need a new clutch?

ive never adjusted a clutch cable before, so not sure.

Loosen the nut on the top and turn the white plastic bit.
Probably adjusted right up allready but ive found if you loosen it you can get the pedal to bite down the bottom with loads of play in it but this can be taken up putting a bolt through the hole in  the top of the clutch pedal with 2 nuts on to adjust the bolt against the metal arm  if that makes sense.
Obviously is just delaying a new clutch but it helps.

if it looks grotty I'd just buy a new cable, saves struggling with a knackered old one. brokes site has a good setup/checking guide
