Title: Another one on the road
Post by: Radek on 12 September 2009, 20:09
Collected on Friday, already has 120 miles:)

So far, so good. I'm happy with DSG and 18" wheels. DSG makes a very nice sound when changing gears...
Sensors useful as I already had to negotiate a couple of narrow passes. I tried the park assist (automatic parallel parking) - works and it is a fantastic way to impress a lady
ACC - no noticable difference between normal and comfort, sport setting makes the steering wheel stiffer.
Dynaudio - so far I've taken it to about 50% of max volume and it was fantastic.
RNS 510 - good, quick to recalculate new route, I got the latest maps (V5). I like that you can point on the map (with your finger) the place you want to go.
I try not to rev it to more then 4000 (5000 max :)) for the first 600 miles or so and I can't tell how it performs near the red line but even that is enough.

But the best part was hearing people on the street saying "Dad, look!" and "GTI, GTI!"

Plus I got my bottle opener! :) Although I didn't get the GTI mats (with red edging) - there were just normal black. My dealer said all GTIs (and GTDs) come with black mats. I'd like to know if you guys got yours.
Fuel con - 30 mpg on avg, in the range between 29 after start and 32 on the way back. Can live with that.
There is a couple of rattles coming from left, right and steering wheel (or combimeter) but hopefully that will be sorted at some point.

Picture coming here (my first so I hope it works...)

Mate, I reckon learning to park on your own would impress the ladies more!

Anyway, welcome, sweet spec, enjoy!

Well, the spec book (prices and option list) says on page 6 "Carpet mats, front and rear with red edging" for GTI and silver edging for GTD.
http://cdn.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/pdf/pricelists/golf-gti-vi-pricelist.pdf (http://cdn.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/pdf/pricelists/golf-gti-vi-pricelist.pdf)

And there's a picture of it on page 15 of the GTI brochure (where aluminium pedal is shown).
http://cdn.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/pdf/brochures/golf-gti-vi-brochure.pdf (http://cdn.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/pdf/brochures/golf-gti-vi-brochure.pdf)

I know the spec can always change at any time but...

Come on guys, don't let VW get away with it!
My dealer promised to look into it and replace the black ones if possible.

For me Carbon Grey is becoming the Oak Green of Mk6.

ACC - no noticable difference between normal and comfort, sport setting makes the steering wheel stiffer.
Interesting to read that. Like to know how you get on over time.

Congradulations on your new car.
Im still waiting for mine which have similar specs to yours-Its been 13 weeks since I place my order
As for ACC, you need to give a bit more time to 'adapt'
On my other car which got a similar system, it took more than 2000 miles for the computer to work out the correct parameters for my local road! since I use sport for trackdays only!

Very nice car, Radek. Now I know what mine would have looked like if I'd stuck with the Monza wheels. As for the red piping on the mats, however appealing it might sound in theory, I reckon it would look tacky. Could be mistaken, though, I'd like to see a set...

hi hi hi I have the carpets with the red trims with the GTI logo in my car... I will get some pics later today... it looks nice in the car actually...
How????

Thanks guys!
Another thing - I was offered (again) a fixed price maintance pack for service, tyres, parts, etc at about £40 p/m. At first it looks quite a lot (£1500 for 3 years) but as it covers tyres it starts to look differently. I asked if they would replace the tyres if I need new ones every 6000 miles due to wear and they said - yep, they designed for grip not for longevity so it's no prob. So if I need 8 new tyres over 3 years/40000 miles (3 sets for he front, 1 set for the rear), £120 a tyre, the deal doesn't look that bad.
The replacement tyres are Continental - don't know the details.

Has anyone taken maintanace offer? How often do you think you'll have to change tyres? I don't think they'll last till 10000 miles:)
I got Bridgestone Potenza.

Hmmm, even if you drive enthusiastically you should get 10K from the fronts at least (unless you're a wheelspinning loon)!

If you swithc the fronts to rears at about 6000 you should get at least 15K out of the pair minimum.

The mats were already there when I collected it. So I thought wow... must be made for the GTIs specially... since the normal Golfs had black ones...

Are they proper VW ones, or some third-party manufacturer?

Proper VW ones, since the underneath of the mats have VW stickers with product codes etc...

Jammy git! is this another case of "rip of Britain", high charge for the car and then none of the extras that other countries get.  I'm well miffed

Another example of VW bean counting I suspect. Remember, they were originally going to charge £15 for the ipod cable until they changed their mind and gave that and the USB one away for free.
£22k plus for a car (which is itself overpriced) and they penny pinch on mats. The thing is they know they have a fantastic product and idiots like me will still buy it.
I do, however, think that the GTi is right at the limit of what I'd be prepared to pay. I fear that in 4 years time when I come to replace it the price will be far too unrealistic (not to mention unaffordable for me) and I will have to go elsewhere. There will, however, be someone out there who can afford it and will be prepared to pay for it so they will continue ratcheting up the price.

Just seen a carbon grey one in the Wickes car park in Dunstable - first time I have seen this colour in the flesh and I have to say it looked very classy.

Still glad that I've ordered the black, but the carbon grey would definitely be my second choice colour.

Enjoy.

Quite possibly! although Im not really liking the attention the car is getting at the moment.. 3 guys in hooded tops and ballys stood around my car at 3 in the morning

Didnt have that problem with the old car in black... which was much more discrete :undecided:

I am probably stating the obvious here, but I think everybody will need to be extra vigilant as the GTI will be a bit of target for a while, more specifically to the professionals.

Very true. Dont think you local hoodie crew would know what to do with one... unless of course they get their hands on your keys. You have been warned!!  :lipsrsealed:

Agreed. I try to make sure 'hoody types' aren't following me when I pull into the drive... just in case.

As for the GTI mats, I found these for €100 on VW's German site. I'd like to see a picture of what they look like in the car, though: they look very slightly cheesy to me (please convince me otherwise, so I have an excuse to spend some more dosh on my car )

The mats have black edging, not red (for the GTI) or grey (GTD) as previously stated.
