Do any of you guys have GAP insurance...?
Purchased a year 2007 MkV GTi just 7 weeks ago and have every intention of keeping it for at least a 4 year period, if not longer.
Done a few internet searches with prices of about £230 for back to invoice value cover...sounds like a good deal...if, god forbid, my beloved GTi was written off in say 3 years time.
Can anyone recommend a reputable insurer...? Any positive or negative experiences out there...?
All advice greatly appreciated.

GAP insurance is good if you are keeping your car.....AND keeping it stock. If you look into the smallprint GAP will not cover any modded motors

A lot of them are not worth the paper they writen on , I wouldnt bother with GAP insurance!! Just a big con in my eyes. Ive had 4 GTImk5 over the last 5yrs never been a problem, but then I never wrote one off, As Hurdy says read the small print?? Enjoy steve edition30

I bought GAP cover from VW when i did the deal on mine, it was £395, and its valid for 3 years- so it falls just outside the warranty period as I bought nearly new, good for me as I didn't really want to modify until both these had elapsed incase anything bad happens.
Peace of mine for me, tho I can understand how people can say not to bother as i'm sure some companys don't like paying out!
Their was a member on here a while ago that wished he got GAP as he had a new Ed 30 that got wrote off by another driver, may be worth looking for his link!?
......There are different levels of GAP bare in mind!

mmmm .. it paid off OK for the guy on here who's Gti was written off in the floods in Hull. For around £200 online, it's quite good value IMO. There are a few conditiions with most policies, but nothing too onerous. The other thing to consider is that GTi's, R32's are stolen a lot more than other cars, yet the GAP insurance price seems to be fixed, so seems better value to me for these type of cars.

I was quoted around £395 for GAP by the dealer when I bought my car. It sounded like a lot so I did a web search and found similar for £150. Showed this to my dealer and he halved the VW quote, which I took. If they can always be that flexible it might be worth a try "haggling".

I went for it as I plan to keep the car.
VW dealer quoted me £395, found a similar policy online for about £200, told the stealer and they offered me their policy for £190. No brainer really.

I bought an ED30 in July 2007 brand new for a few quid over £23000.
In March 2009 some idiot ran into the back of me on the motorway and his insurance paid me out £16325. I've managed to get them up to £16855 so far and am still battling 6 months on to the very day!
If I'd had Gap Insurance I'd have been accepting the first offer of £16325, then claiming the £6675 back from the Gap Insurance.
Currently I'm about £6k out of pocket from an accident that wasn't my fault.
When I finally get a replacement car, I'll be taking Gap Insurance for sure. Its one of these things that you'll never think you'll need... but for £300 or so - its a big piece of mind!

Yeah, I found that the policy my dealer was offering was a lot better than the internet based companies (remember the big print giveth but the small print taketh away) but used the internet deals to get a better deal with the stealers.
They make better margins on the insurance / finance products than the cars so its well worth haggling hard on these.

Hi mate, like the name
I had GAP insurance when i purchased my MR2. The cover lasted 2 years. I smashed up my MR2 on the 23rd Month of the 24 month cover. I got £8k back from my insurance company for my car (as that was market value) and then £4k from the GAP mob. I got the £12k i paid for that car 23 months ago. My loan for the personal loan balance is sitting at £5k at the moment and I have a £12k car (as below).
So in my experience YES its fan-fooking-tastic

Many thanks to all who replied/commented.
Took out a policy at click4gap.co.uk for a 4 year period at a cost of £230...that's just over £1 per week...cheap at half the price for the piece of mind.
Mark,
Live in Aberdeen now but born and bred in Glasgow...my father was a dyed in the wool blue-nose...and I was good friends at school with Ally McCoist...hence the name...!!!
