Title: Towbar
Post by: mb26 on 11 September 2009, 13:15
Has anyone had a towbar fitted to their GTI Mk6? I want to get one that stays well hidden when removed if it's possible.

Thanks. Do you know if the electric socket is hidden out of the way?

Go and stand in the corner and wear the naughty hat!

Seriously though, don't VW do an official towbar?  Like they did on the Mk5?  Which had a little removable pannel where the detachable ball fitted?

A clean install means a factory fit, i.e. when you order th car.

Is a car like the GTI not too grand to be towing?  wouldn't be seen dead in my GTI doing any towing!! they just don't go together.

I wanted the removable tow hitch but my dealer told me that the tow hitch manufacturer that VW sources from couldn't keep up with demand so if I wanted one put on the car in the factory my build would be delayed until next year!

So I of course passed on that. Now I'll apparently have to pay 50% more to get it fitted after it's delivered next year some time. Not sure if I like the idea of having them cutting the bumper though.  My old S60 had that done at a Volvo dealers and it looks like crap.

Thought the GTI was the 'practical' hot hatch. Isn't that why we buy them?
I won't be towing anything as I've got nothing to tow (until my mates ' RS breaks down ).

If you have a caravan or trailer I can't think of a better way to tow it.

I asked VW up in Perth about towbars they told me there was a plastic trim that had the cut out for the towbar in it. That part was around £35 and is black anyway, however, the total cost of fitting to their demonstrator was £800!! Am sure it can been for a lot less but our warranty might be an issue? I am thinking about putting the £800 towards an old toyota jeep instead.

Thanks, so we can atleast get the replacment back panel.  I wonder which of the two companies that usually supply VW they use for the mk6 GTI towbar as it will be much cheaper to buy direct than through VW :undecided:
