Title: Can't get a good signal on the radio.

Some of the local stations are ausible, but a little fuzzy. Can't get Radio 1 most of the time. So guessing something is wrong with the cable.
Know the stereo is fine as has been in my last 2 cars with no problems.
Any easy ways to test the cable? Should it be a circuit between the 2 poles on the cable?
Is a new cable hard to run? It's a roof mounted, rear aerial.
