Title: Golf GTi 16v Limited Edition
Post by: Leew on 18 July 2003, 11:59
Allo all, first port on this forum :)

I'm looking to buy my third GTi. I've seen a 16v for sale that states its a Limited Edition. Its 1990 model.

Is this true about it being a limited edition? What is different from a normal one? Are they worth more? more desirable?

Thanks

Leew

Which limited edition?

The chances are that it is a metalic black, green, or blue, with blacked out rear lights and a 3 stripe interior.

This was sort of standard from 90 especially on 16v, but was the spec of the '88 Campaign, which was a limited edition.

I have noticed quite a few people describing a 90+ 16v as a Campaign - they are thoroughly incorrect unfortunately.

Our March 89 16V has the 3 stripe (is that the raindow one?) interior and is dark metallic blue.

Does that mean it could have been a campaign one? All the parts show 88 manufacture dates.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay. Been away. (If anyone knows how to set the forum to show only threads that I've participated in please mail me).

'89 is too late for a Campaign. My understanding was that the whole lot were presold. I'm still trying to get information about the Campaign and there isn't much.

However, it is possible that for some reason your car was shacked up for 10 months before being registered. Like one they forgot about. Which if it were the case, and you could prove it would make it extremely rare and probably the only one of its kind.

Does it have big or small bumpers? It should have small bumpers, but an '89 could have either.

The key I would think are the wheels. They should be Le Castellet which are flat alloys with 7 spokes and 14" (not 5 and 15" which are Estorils).

I would be very interested to know what your car is.

Can I point out that the rainbow seats of the 1988 campaign have distinctly different bolster to those of the 1990 onwards 16v's and 1992 8v so unless it has had seats fitted from an 88 Campaign (unlikely) it's quite easy to tell.

Yep, I'll get some pics today (of the seats!)

Ah, very simple actually. I am rebuilding (nearly done) a Campaign, and the interior has been changed. The original interior is worn and marked.

The standard trick is to get a 3 stripe from later model Mk2 and chuck it in the Campaign, but IF there is a difference, I want to know so that I can track down the correct item, and not stick the wrong one in the car.

Hmm well I have pics but you wont be convinced as both cars have done 150k miles and the bolster have gone saggy and pics doesn't look as convincing as being there.

Guess you'll have to trust me!

cheers

PS there is a different to the seat height adjustment too between an 88 car and a 1990+....

There does seem to be some confusion. I was always led to believe there was some kind of Limited Edition 16v Oak Green MkII that was around either 91 or 92. But  I thought  that 92 stuff was just runout.

Any further opinions?

Not that I know of.

Many of the 16v in 90-91-92 were Campaign spec'd. (3 stripe interior, blacked out rear lights). Some had the Estoril 15" alloy, which is similar to the Le Castellet, but its a 5 spoke 15" rim against a 7 spoke 14" rim.

The only other 90 model that I know of being a limited edition was that ghastly pink one, "Rain and Sleat" or something.

Our 89 16V was registered 03-89.  It is Helios Blue and has a rainbow interior with the hight adjust on the right front corner of the seat.  I'm really confused as it's not a 90 spec rainbow but sound lke the car is not a Campaign spec either.
I've know nt he car for the last 6 years and the interior wasn't changed in that time.

It has gold BBS cross-spoke alloys on it but that's because someone swapped them with off his other car that had been highly tuned by Awesome so that doesn't help either.  It's also got blue hella rear clusters so can't judge them either.

As far as I can see it had no optional extras either, no e/w, no e/m no PAS but it does have a steel sunroof.

Looks like it may be an odd one.

its not a Campaign.

All 16v Campaign had electric windows. For some reason they got removed from later 16vs.
