Title: Loss of power steering in wet
Post by: philadams16V on 14 September 2004, 16:38
Just wondering if anyone knew or has been experiencing a similar problem.  I have a Hreg valver and I totally lose the steering sometimes in wet conditions.  The steering goes all heavy and I have to slow right down to recover it.  Seems to happen more on roundabouts and 90degree turnings.  Now I'm not a mechanic but I think it may be the belt just slipping in the power steering mech.  In dry conditions I get an awful squeeling on full lock as well. Can tell me how to fix this problem and how much it'll cost.  Cheers

Yea mate this has been around before. I had it with my Mk 3 and a few others with Mk 2's have had it.

Solution is easy - change the drive belt.

Cost of belt about 4 quid. Fairly simple DIY or an hours labour at a garage.

^^Aye, totally agree - the squealing is the belt slipping.

You loosing power steering in the wet is the belt failing to grip on the pulley (when they are wet).

Change the belt and you'll be cool and the gang.

The belt PAS belt from GSF arrived today this morning mate.  Unfortuantly the part no. does not match either of the ones you supplied.

Bosch  AVX 10 x 635

Perhaps they have sent you 2 altenator belts.  Goodluck

The belt ive got is the wrong one m8.  I have the one that connects the altenator to the aircon pump on mine.  Not sure what that will be on yours as u prob aint got aircon.  The belt is the right width and has right teeth but it just aint long enough to go over the 3 cogs for the PAS. Tightened my PAS belt though as it was pretty loose and steering seems ok now, so fingers crossed.  Good luck

Found out why my steering was squeeling in the wet...... Cars in the garage having a new head gasket set fitted  :'( I asked the bloke to take a look at tightening the belt for me, turns out that the belt is split slightly and the tensioner was broken! So when I get my car back hopefully it should drive a lot better  ;D Albeit ?550 lighter in the pocket

HELP PLEASE SOMEONE

Finally got round to doing the belts, If i am rigt in syaing the power steering belt has to come off first to llowthe alternator belt to go on yes?

So I lossend the front tensioner for the power seering and the thing would not budge, I did notce on the sump side that the pump has a slot on it, does this have to be lossend also?? I i did not want to undo it incase I knackeed something up :)

btw Haynes is crap on this, there is not a step by step guide for this!

you have probably missed a bolt. theres one (if looking at tthe car) at the back of the pump which is a bit tricky to find, you need an extension bar to reach it with a socket.

i had problems getting a power steering belt to fit. even woking colbornes couldnt work it out :o my power steering has two pulleys instead of the normal 3 and i got no idea why, vag matey said that maybe the power steering was put on afterwards? how many pulleys have you boys got ???

Thanks mate

I think i have 3 pulleys!

Well i have loosened the tensioner at the very bottom, and the bolt at the top which looks like where the wuhole thing swivels from, so ther is another bolt on the back, between the sump and the pump? I did notice this had a grove so it looks like it can move between this grove! is this correct, anything else?

btw looking at the power steering belt, it is around a third of the size of the alternator belt, so will have to take this back to gsf for them to get me the right one!

its usually the width of the belt which makes it squeak cos it runs sideways in the groove

Right this is driving me nutz, I have undone all the bolts that i can see and it still will not budge! if i have undone them all should it move freely?

I have undone: (if looking from the weel side, which i have removed)

1 x bolt on tension on bottom

2 x bolts on the lefto9f the tensioner

2 x bolts on the pump it self

and the swivel bar above the pump

The pump is loose but will not swivel??

I can't see that other bolt o the sum side you mentioned, is it near the pump it self or the arm?
