Title: turbo conversion
Post by: farmer on 07 September 2009, 13:26
Hi my mate has offered me a turbo, inlet and manifold of a tt for 200£ witch I think is a bargin but where do I start to convert my car iv running a stander 1.8 8v I was thinkin of making a engine to fit it too abit like the turbo tecnics but would it be cheaper or easyer to put a 20v t in it how could I go about this? Any surgestions ?

You're looking at about £3-4k for either approach.

Custom management, forged/uprated internals - unless you have a 1.8 8v G60 block ... a total nightmare to be honest. You'd be better off trying to use a 20vT, but it still aint cheap.

If you have to ask these sort of questions and are under the impression that you can just bolt a 20v inlet and manifold on a normal 8v engine (thats how your post reads anyway) you really shouldnt be considering it at all. You can do a turbo or supercharger conversion for very little money if you know what your doing and set realistic goals but I suspect the turbo you have been offered may be too big for a small budget.

If your mechanical skills are as good as your language skills, then I think you should improve both before trying anything nearly as advanced as seeking information about nailing a turbo conversion together out of some random bits you have lying around, or can buy 'cheap'.

Doing anything like what you're suggesting needs a lot of research.  People will respond a lot better to your questions if you use proper sentences using real words and punctuation.

The flip side is I probably have a load of bits you can have for 'cheap' which may be useful in this conversion you're thinking about......

I have scrap I need to offload, after selling some *actually* useful bits for a BAM conversion to Harney on Monday.  This guy would appear to be happy buying any old tat, so worth a shot.....

Just out of curiousity, why would a BAM be unsuitable for daily pursuits?

i'm not saying it wouldn't be just from what i've read alot of people who use BAM use them for track toys, the reason i went down the AGU road is a friend of mine who works for audi said there's not really to much difference and the AGU is easier to fit and more reliable plus i'll be upgrading it before it goes into the car anyway and am looking at about 220-240bhp hopefully ;)

Well turbo 16v on a propper stealth racing install and re-map is giving 237bhp on high boost. Just to give you an idea

the 16v seems to have more tuning potential with boost than the 20v    we are taklking v high numbers and big £££££ enignes tho but 16vt motors doo seem to be abel to make more power

Yeah there was a brown mk2 16vt in PVW a while back owned by a german army driver, still 1.8 but was making some crazy power (500+) using a porsche turbo, plus other bits and bobs.
It was well tasty.

16VT is a rich man's 20VT.

Go figure.

16VT is a rich man's 20VT.

But one has to dream doesn't one?

I'd be happy with a car that works and is reliable at the moment...
