a camper van? :D
cant really swing anything else..
and this is on the condition my folks can borrow it to go sleep somewhere in.. so i gotta get one thats capable of at least that.. hehe
but not sure i'll be able to afford anything now for a while depending on how much damage fixing this damn idle prob on my car to get it through its MOT is gonna be :(
-
good deal for a camper with the folks!!!!, watch the prices fall from october onwards!!! ;D thats the time to buy as peeps who have no winter storage etc for them tend to shift em on!! watch ebay prices!!

Bug ger ! :D Have to agree with Gaz though cos took the camper to Vanfest in Malvern last weekend and the prices in the for sale section were stupid money, put it this way overseer you could buy a decent karmen ghia to do up for cheaper than some of those campers. :)
-
i'm not looking for anything over the top..
i'm talkin about spending up to about a grand on a barely tax exempt bay thats just about MOT'd..
does that seem a reasonable expectation?
-
You may be able to get one in a couple of months or so when people want rid as gaz said, but there were some pretty rough ones there that were up for a couple of grand and above, didn't see any there for a grand but then again they are gonna put the prices up at places like vanfest anyway. If your not in a rush bide your time and look through the air cooled mags like camper and volksworld but the prices are pushing up.
Look at this site www.dubs4sale.co.uk and click on splits and bays, there's a 1978 bay window that needs work for ?1200. Don't know much about campers yet but if you need any help let me know, the guy I bought mine off restored it and he knows shat loads about them, I could put you in touch with him, he's a nice guy and I'm sure he wouldn't mind. :)

thx for link..
well i've got a mate that just got a devon for 750 thats in good nick.. and i saw one similar that went on ebay for 800
dont really wanan venture further than 80 miles or so from here as what i'll prob do is go have a look on my own, then have to get a lift back out to pick it up if i decide to buy it.
am surprised there arent many on autotrader!
i do know a couple people who used to be deep into the aircooled scene down here ( "apple county dubbers" ) they still hear of things fairly often :)
-
Your mate got a good deal there then no doubt about it. autotrader is rank for campers as there never seems to be many on there but if you've got a few people looking out for you you should get one soon. Happy hunting matey, I love mine and it gets loads of looks, some admiring, some taking the mick but it's great. :D
-
Good luck Overseer mate - Campers can be a minefield.
Autotrader will be no good coz Campers are rather specialised. Best looking at websites etc and thru the scene, so if ya have some contacts then use them. People i know are in Brighton or Cornwall. The Cornish lot may be of use, so i'll see what i can find out.
Best time to buy is October to Xmas. After that people start thinking about putting it back on the road for summer.
I'll let ya know if i find out anything useful.

thx... i'll be mostly interested in making sure the body isn't rotted through.
i'm still trying to formulate a plan in my head...
essentials are definitely a small widescreen LCD and dvd player in the back.. and some 'thud'... a working fridge and bed (or beds if its a pop top).. not too fussed about the cooker or sink.. prob be good to be able to have a cuppa tho :)
-
Look on the bright side, when you get kicked out by the missus you'll always have somewhere to kip ;) Swung it for me ;D
-
Try having a look here:
http://www.adtrader.co.uk/index.php
There are quite a few for sale for well under ?1000, but mostly require work.
I've also been toying with the idea of a camper but also would like to keep it below ?1k (if that's realistic). I don't mind if it's a bit tatty as long as it's got a good engine and not too much work required for an mot.
-
sounds like we after same thing.. will check that site out :)
gibby.. well i'm living with 'rents..(which is why its time to buy this kinda sh!t now!! lol) ?but would be good to get away in it sometimes.. its not such an issue with girly as she has a flat on her own ;)? the golf's for getting up there as she's an hour away.. this'll be for long weekends. or when i'm off with my mates... or can use it for hauling skaters around :)
-
lol. The way I see it is there's no need to be at home at the weekend if you have a camper cos you can just drive off find a campsite say an hour or so away and that's it, instant tent, put the kettle on and cook some sausages. ;D

-
Buyer beware!!!
Any Camper that needs an MOT u can bet will need a host of work. Unless u got good facilities and loads of spare time, wont be able to see g/f so much!
Good luck guys
-
ohh i'm not buying anything not MOT'd.. no way..
come to think of it.. think i've got a bus exhaust sat in my garage somewhere.. left over from a bunch of stuff i got with my beetle.. lol..
-
when you veiw a van 'seer check the sills, floor pan, and out riggers (jacking points) these are major areas of concern on an old van, also a severly rusty beam etc , arches, door bottoms etc arnt that big a job as there just grind out weld in and fill and paint panels. My old camper failed mot big time on floor pan and out riggers, had to have a fair bit of work, but if you have friends in the sheet metal industry box section and sheet steel is alot cheaper than any pants repo panels you can buy!!

yeah thx.. i wasnt sure what or wher an outrigger is.. but i've just been shown that the bus floorpan is essentially similar to the beetle one, without the notorious heater channels, but with these outriggers to aid stiffness as its on a grander scale.
