Title: Reverse cam?
Post by: GlennQuagmire on 04 September 2009, 12:11
Have anyone tried the reverse (or parking or what it's called) camera yet? Im interested in seeing a demo of it but a youtube search yields nothing at all ... I wonder if it will be worth the extra money.

I had 2 test drives and both cars had it. IMHO it's really good. Funny thing, when I was reversing the car using the mirrors I didn't think I could make it into the place behind me without scratching other cars with my rear bumper. The dealer who was with the car with me could see the situation on the display and said "Trust the camera". So I did and it went fine.
I decided to go for the whole pack with front and rear sensors and the park assist system which is only £60 on top of that. Bargain!

I got the park assist and its really good.  Gave it a try for the 1st time last night.  It works well and its something to show off to the passanger

the only time a reversing camera is useful is on a luton van or anything larger. even then you can still manage without them.

I went for it on my car because the demo car I drove had it.

I had it on my X5 but the camera was always exposed so got dirty everytime it rained. The VW one is hidden behind the badge.

VW 1, BMW 0

Here are a couple on VW's. I'd imagine they would be the same.

I thought for £150 it hardly costs anything but could imagine when I come to sell the car it might appeal to someone and just clinch the deal

exactly, thats what it is all about, the more stuff on your car when you come to sell it the easier i reckon you can sell it

I'm all for charity but the mkvi is a chuffing expensive car. Could have got a mkv and given the rest to charity!

Parking camera and esp park assist is relatively cheap compared to cost of the car. I don't need it, but for the sake of my newbie driver wife I think its a good option to have and it is a nice "show off" feature for mates and when it comes to selling time.

Actually I have to confess that despite being an experienced driver, I did reverse into a low post once! A camera would have saved a £1k insurance claim, not to mention the shame of it all!

Yeah, I did this too with a Passat Estate which cost almost £1K to fix. That's part of the reason I want a reverse camera. The other is I don't like all the parking sensors on the bumpers. The real reason though is my son thinks it's cool.

did you both reverse into it at 50mph+? can't see how it would have possibly caused that much damage - bit daft taking it to insurers as well.

 mine was a company car and they wanted it fixed. it was only a couple of mph but with VW's parts prices, a bumper cover, some chrome trim, a tail light, some paint, consumables and labour quickly rack up the cost!

was prob about 10 mph - but left a really sharp crease in the boot lid and moved the side panel out of line.  being an accord type r, the boot is really light and insubstantial.  hence needed a new boot, new bumper, painting, etc.  having one claim on my insurance hasn't affected my premium by much at all, so i feel fine about taking it to the insurers.

Found this over on R32OC.com. Looks like the cost to retrofit is in the region of £300 DIY.

Retro fitting OEM parts is always more expensive

BTW the non camera badge is £95

WOW!!!  I made my own badge camera in my MK5 using an actuator connected to my reverse bulb to pull the badge open via a kevlar pulley!
I bought the badge / switch from ebay for 99p plus £4 postage (Brand new in box) and then bought another one on ebay after I botched up my cutting the hole for putting the camera in.  It was used but great condition - £8 inc postage!!

As soon as I'd fitted it, it became an optional extra in the Passat!
