Title: mk2 jetta grinding

hello everyone!
everytime i sit in traffic and the car idles for long enough, and the temp reaches its max before the fans kick in, theres a really loud violent grumbling/grinding noise from what sounds like the engine bay. if i try tp put it in gear it goes in fine but grinds like crazy. first i thought thrust bearing, now i think it could be the gearbox. but neither explain why it only happens at higher operating temps. any ideas as to what this could be?
