Title: Getting a mk4 golf
Post by: luigi_t8 on 31 August 2009, 15:35
hey there,
i'm new to the forum so hi! i'm looking to get a mk4 golf, i need some help choosing which model to get because i couldnt find a model list anywhere and it's always good to get more opinions. I basically want one thats as fast as possible without spending too much, it doesnt need to be immaculate condition coz i want to work on it anyway. Please advise me on which model would be best. Anything up to 4 or 5 grand but really i'd like to spend between 2 and 3. Thanks for any help.

get a 1.8T or a TDI 130/150

check out the maintenance section for tips on what to look out for, with your budget you should be able to find a very good 1.8T or derv

Oh and dont listen to Wurzel he's full of sh!t

Audi A3's (or even S3's) which are vertically identical, seem to better value at the moment.  ;)

I would go for a Ford Focus or Seat Leon.

If you do get a mk4 get a diesel because the petrols are not that good. And be prepared to have to spend a bit on the suspension to get the handling half decent. The Audi S3 is decent too but expensive.

As said before 1.8T if you don't do many miles, (try and get a 180bhp like mine with 6 speed box) or 150bhp TDI for the diesel.

Don't discount the S3 or Leon Cupra R's because prices of those at the moment are well in your budget!

The Golf may not perform better then the Seat but it's definitely better looking inside & out.

I actually prefer the look of the Seat. Looks more like a car and less like a lump of lard. It's a better drive so is the driver's choice really.

I'd hate seeing the Seat logo anywhere on the car imo. :lipsrsealed:

I agree the S logo is not good. It's too big and pronounced, and dull. But really apart from that the Leon looks pretty decent.

I will. I still need to fix a few things though, it's costing me a bit of money so I might have to keep it a while. For some reason some twit put a mk3 front suspension part on the front left, the garage were wondering why it looked different and they called today to say they've worked it out. So I'm going to get the rear bushes changed to vRS because one of them has worn out and probably TT bushes in the front and maybe I'll start being happier.

defo get the 1.8t model or gt tdi. Any of the VAG group cars with the 1.8t lump in are good fun, sadly for buyers the golfs hold there money abit more than the others, ive just bourght a octavia vrs which has the 1.8t lump but runs 180bhp standard. I wish id researched abit more before buying my golf and i would have bourght the octavia vrs as there cheaper and actually better cars in stock form, no offense ment to everyone with golfs  :lipsrsealed:

Just take your time looking round to find a good clean one mate, don't rush into anything.

It's true though isnt it, in standard form the Golf isnt worth the money. Everyone seems to want one so the price gets stupidly inflated. Amazing what a name can do.

wow...thanks for all the replies!

tbh i wasnt expecting so many so soon but this is great!!!

i like the look of the audi and the golf especially but i'm not so sure about the seat. What kind of price am i looking at for the s3 and how does it compare to the 1.8 20vt. Also, how will the 1.8 20vt compare with the gt tdi 150 and is that the fastest deisel?

thanks again, Louis tate

The 150 is the fastest diesel, there's a 130 too which is decent. They'll give better fuel economy than with the 1.8T which might sway you considering the way things are going with fuel prices.

1.8T is not much cop around town TBH. High 20s - low 30s

Yeah that's a significant saving even in town use. Proportionately it's probably the same as motorway use. 40mpg in town is good!

how much power does the 1.8T have and is there a significant increase in performance over the tdi 150?

how does the s3 or a fast a3 compare to the 1.8t and tdi 150 in price and performance (i dont know much about a3's)

thanks, Louis tate

It depends what A3 or S3 you're looking at, there's plenty of engines to choose from inside them as well.

The 1.8T has 150bhp, unless it's one of the newer models that came with 180bhp, the giveaway is the 6 speed gearbox.

klkl....
.....so by the sounds of it both the gt tdi 150 and the 1.8T have 150bhp so i think i'll go for the deisel as i'll get a better mpg and it will have more tourques. Can i get a 5 door one of these, any other comments suggestions or hints about this car would be great so carry on posting

what is the a3 equivalent to this?

but then there is the funny noise that comes out of all derv owners.

Its better than the petrol because of the mpg.

Nothing else is better about the derv  (runs away)

4mo is nice, quick and well specced.

Think most of the a3's have the lower specced diesel engines, not 100 percent mind.
I know they do a 1.9tdi quattro though
