Title: Topic solved mod
Post by: Jay on 30 August 2009, 17:55
I was thinking this could be useful for people when searching too see if someone asked a question and got the problem solved, it looks like you can assign it to certain boards, so you can assign it to the MK1-6, Garage, Detailing etc boards and won't have to assign it to Off Topic & VW related etc could also be useful in the Classified sections

It may still work, do you have the ability to install another forum and then test the mod?

Would save me installing a VM, SMF and the mod on my work laptop.

this is never gonna work because people cannot be f**ked to search anyways..

this week there have been about 8-9 threads about the crankposition sensor in the mk3 section, people asking where its located, etc etc.. its like a weekly thing..

i wish people would search but hey ho'

Typical MK3 owners, slow on the uptake

Seriously though what about a message in the content field of the 'post new topic' saying something like "Have you used the search function above? Please do so before before posting a new topic  which may have been covered previously"

This will force people to read and delete it because it is in the content field.

iirc that *should* only be a quick edit of 1 of the html/php files that controls the posting of new topics.  that coupled with this sort of mod would probably work really well.

That or mods just need to be more ruthless and start messaging people, locking posts and pointing to a topic with the answers.

This is also why a wiki would be awesome.

+1 for this!!

got to tread a fine line with newbies as in
a) don't want to seem like a complete cnut
b) you don't want to do the work for them either

I know, it is a tough call as what to do with posts asking the same thing over and over. That's why I think the first step would be adding in the simple text stating that they need to have done a search before posting otherwise their post will be deleted, in a polite way ofc.

Alternatively, creating a new section for known/common faults

Wiki would do that

why would a user find and search the wiki for the answer, if using the search here is too tricky?!
