Title: Idle issue after TB cleaned
Post by: golf-sib on 30 August 2009, 17:39
Hi, new to here :)

I currently own/drive a 1.8T GTI AGU, heres my problem:

My car was running fine at 800rpm at idle, decided to give the TB a Clean and the sensor that goes to the side of it. After the clean plugged everything back up, let the TB reset the position and now when I start it up it bounces around 1000-1400rpm for no reason, checked on VAG-COM, No error codes, body has been re-aligned, won't be the maf as that was not touch and everything was in perfect working order before the clean.

Any help or advice would be appreciated, many thanks in advance!

How long did you leave vagcom in basic settings to allow the TB to re-adapt?

I did it the manual way, turn the key into idle position, and u can hear the stepper motor on the tb turn and once its done it clicks. Reason for doing this is we tried vag com, but it would not allow me to reset the TB, nor would it allow me to change the value of the idle speed.

I've had varying results with that method of tb adaption on cable operated butterflies.. now i just use vagcom. Will it not let you get into block 098 at all? If certain DTCs are present it wont let you in. Are you using the free version?

Using registered if that helps

yep that helps, that means it should be working

so what happens when you try to open measuring block 98?

Basically what happens is this (running vagcom 3112n):

Enter Bank 098, press GO, voltage comes up, press the "switch to basic setting", then this comes up! "Error Group 98 not available"

Just did a rescan of error codes and got:

17973 - Throttle Actuator: Lower stop not reached
17967 - Throttle Valve Control Part: Fault in basic setting (this one not going away)

if you can't clear that code then you've either put the throttle body back together wrong (missed a plug or something), broken something as you were doing it, or done something else to cause it not to close :undecided:

Plugs are all in, it is in closed position from what I can see, but I don't see how I could of broken it... Its all abit strange that it still does it after the manual method.

i reckon you've snagged a wire then, can you get your hands on a multimeter to check you're getting voltage to the tb?

Not today, but on tuesday I can use the workplaces one, what am I checking so I can let you know how things go, also a quick question theres a wire at the bottom of the TB, has 8pin holes, but it only has 7 pins, is that the way it should look?

I think that's right, couldn't say for certain until i have one in front of me. Without checking wiring diagrams i can't say which wires on the plug you need to be testing, that's something you're going to have fun with on google

Have you tried going for a quick drive to see if it will adapt itself that way? Takes about 15 minutes of driving i think.

Also did you have either of those error codes before you took the throttle body off?

I cleaned the TB a week ago did some heavy right footing, still the same old stuff. My friend suggested I reclean the TB again incase something is caught on the sensor as well as clean the contacts, did it again today, still same problem, but them error codes are new as I only scanned yesterday and they did not exist.

Going R-tech in October  maybe they can help?

either wiring issue or broken potentiometer then... r-tech will probably have a spare throttle body you can test to try to eliminate the possibility of the wiring fault, but if you're going for a remap you really want it sorted before then.

think its advisable for me to dismantle the tb and have a look as VAG COM shows voltages or should I not go by them?

ahh so you can still see the voltage, i didnt realise.. thought vagcom was kicking you out completely

its sounding more and more likely that your potentiometer has had it. you can try taking it to bits but if you can't get it back together then you're stuck without a car unless you can get your hands on another tb... should be able to pick one up from a breakers, or someone on here snagged one from ebay recently pretty cheap.

thanks for that, is the potentiometer located in the TB or is it else where?

its on the tb.. you can't buy it separately unfortunately, i've had broken ones in pieces before (albeit from a dbw model) and there doesn't look like there's anything in there that you can repair. You might be better off leaving it as it is.. while it's still drivable.. until you get your hands on a replacement.

you say its a small piece its not that thing that directly plugs into the tb, looks like two fine wires?

iirc you cant get the potentiometer seperate from the tb its part of the assembly probably easier to source a decent used one  :undecided:

Some more news, took TB cover off, the potentiometer came a bit unclipped so it didn't move, cleaned the contacts, plugged it up and moved the potentiometer about, the voltages changed, so everything seems good there.

Went to reset the TB with the cover open, I can hear the motor turning but nothing was moving gear wise, now I also got a new error code:

VAG-COM Version: Release  311.2-N

Control Module Part Number: 06A 906 018 CG
  Component and/or Version: 1.8L R4/5VT MOTR HS D02
           Software Coding:
            Work Shop Code:
3 Faults Found:
17967 - Throttle Valve Control part (J338): Fault in basic settings
        P1559 - 35-00 - -
17973 - Throttle Actuator (J338): Lower Stop not Reached
        P1565 - 35-00 - -
01165 - Throttle Body Control Module (J338)
        17-10 - Control Difference - Intermittent

Guessing something is messed up as motor spins but not alignment. Anymore help (like dissembling further?) here or just try and get a new TB?
