Title: Mk2 suspension on a Mk3
Post by: mickysuperstar on 29 August 2009, 09:54
Hey!

I'm lowering my car by 40mm so looking for some coilovers or just uprated shocks/springs.

I've seen quite a few used options for a mk2 which are cheap enough... My question is, if a mk2 suspension setup lowers by 60mm - will it lower by the same amount on a mk3?

Thanks everyone....

Micky

Yes will fit but you need to use mk3 top mounts and spring plates.

Also beware of what car they are designed for and the one you are fitting them too.

As they differ depending on the axel weights.

So mk2 suspension on a vr might not be the best bet.

If you fit shocks and springs from a Mk2 onto your Mk3 then there might be about 10mm difference because the Mk2's have a different spring rate so are set up for a lighter car, the Mk3 is a heavy car so the springs might not hold the car so well if you get me? Therefore, sitting a little lower than they would on a Mk2..

For example, I fitted 40mm Mk2 lowering springs to my mates Mk3 and measured it afterwards and it had dropped 50mm.

Basically exactly what i just said.

The different cars have different axel weights.

But that doesnt come into effect when buying hottuning ones, one size fits all with those sh!tters.

Technically speaking you were comparing a Mk2 to a Mk3 VR.

Whereas in actual fact, the Mk3 is a heavier car altogether, be it a 1.4/1.6/1.8/1.9D/1.9TD/2.0/2.8

No. I was taking the 2 extremes. Good suspension kits list different parts for non gti, gti, and vr6.

Wipe the dick of ur head and stop trying to be clever

what year/model is the MK3?
At the front if its a pre-96 non-GTI then it'll have MK2 top mounts anyway, and will be a direct fit.  If its a GTI or post-96 MK3 and you fit std type spring setup then you either need to fit a special 'heavy duty' upper spring mount from an early MK3, or just fit MK2 top mounts.  At the back its all a direct fit.

If you have coilovers then chances are they'll work with either top mount setup regardless anyway
