Hi all,
I'm new to the forum so please be gentle! I Have a MK3 Golf 1.4 8v on a P reg. Its been sitting for about 1 month with no one starting it etc. I went to move it the other day and it didnt even tick over once. It made a weird noise that seemed to come from the fuse compartment under the stearing wheel. I've now located the noise its a clicking noise from a relay with 167 on it?!
I charged the battery over night and stil no luck, today i tried to jump it off my other car but still no luck. It only cranks over once!
I cant think whatelse it might be. If someone could suggest something for me to try I would be very greatful.
Many thanks Ollie

Relay no. 167 is your fuel pump relay mate.
Get that changed and see what happens?

Thanks mate,
I read on the web that its a fuel relay. But would that cause the car not even to crank when i try to start it? Its such a weird thing sometimes it does not even make a noise and the dash lights come on as normal but when i turn the key it all dies!? I just ran a Voltage meter over the battery and its reading 12v!

Are the battery terminals done up tight?
Have you tried bump starting it as the starter motor may have given up?
-
yes could be starter motor, else a wiring issue?
-
Try a fresh battery, might have dropped down too far and not have enough juice.

I have not done a bump start. I dont have a stretch of road long enough where i live as i live in the corner of a cul de sac! I might try later with some help!
I cant see it being a battery issue as it is reading 12v on a volt meter.
I've just ried cleaning the ground wire from the battery and replaced the bolt with a fresh one and some grease. But still no luck!
Is the starter motor almost under the fan at the front of the car?
-
Give the starter a good whack with a hammer.

Battery might read 12V on your meter but under load the battery might not be up to scratch. Saw something similar on a punto recently. Car wouldnt start, relay clicking noise from the fuse box and it turned out to be a weak batt. Swap if you can with a known good one, at least then your not going around in circles

Even a totally knackered battery will turn the engine over if its just been charged overnight, my money is on a seized starter motor.
