So the other day the Turbo on my MKV went, Had it back to VW, They say the turbo failed, And all the oil has pissed into the engine. No Oil was visable on the dipstick, How likely is it that this is going to have caused my engine to be fked also?
-
what caused the turbo to fail??
did you drive it after it failed as chances are you're ruined your cat and exhaust if you drove it for a length of time
-
Im not sure what caused it to fail. However the car couldn't be driven straight after as the oil caused to much pressure in the engine and the engine wouldn't even tick over. Needed recovery

£8500!!????
start looking on Ebay for rear ended GTI's :afro:
do you know what caused the turbo failure??
-
Presumably that is for a base engine, turbo, including labour and VAT?
Phone round some good indys, the $tealers will be fleecing you for about £80 an hour for labour.
At a guess, it must be circa £5K for the engine and turbo from VW (parts only).
What is the age mileage and how far out of warranty is it? Might be worth asking for a goodwill contribution from VW if it's got full history etc etc.

what a fooking joke!! I presume its got full service history too??
as already mentioned i'd be pushing for a goodwill contribution
-
Sorry to hear it
I'd tell them you have to cancel the mk6 if they can't sort it out for a reasonable price. Are you trading it in?
Also ask how much the labour is and a breakdown in costs. Maybe worth supplying a second hand engine?

2nd hand engine off ebay/breakers for a grand, someone competent could have it all in and working in 2 days... i'd say even if things don't go fully according to plan you could have it sorted for less than 2k.
-
There goodwill is £3000 quid off, Sounds reasonable when you put it like that, However thats still £5500, Makes me sick im passing them 27,000 on Tuesday treating me like a right thingy, Bought new from them on an 07 new full service history with them also, Done like 70k in just over 2years lol, Warrenty expired. Wouldn't budge on £5500. unacceptable really. I asked how much would they give me for car as it stands and they said nothing :undecided:
-
If you bought it from them new and have also always had it serviced by them (not to mention all the cars you've bought) then you need to puch much harder for goodwill. Go to VW customer service about it too. All they can say is no.......
They can do better than £3k off.
Personally, I would cancel your order for MK6 GTI and go elsewhere.
Another option is to squeeze them as hard as possible for a parts discount, then get the engine fitted by an indy.

they should be able to advise you further as my missus (works for Trading Standard) reckons you can push for a lot more :afro:

Awful news chap, sorry to hear that..
Have they already agreed a trade in value for your mk5 (I'm assuming you intended to part-ex here)
If so I would get it trailered into the car park "ready" for trade in. Hopefully by the time they try starting it up and moving it round the back you will have paid, signed, and drove off

ive gotta ask in what circumstances did the turbo blow?

+1 I am wondering the same.

Popped just as it was coming onto full boost, Loads of smoke came out of the back of the car. No warning lights no nothing.

There's an ED30 being broken in Ireland at the moment, might be worth calling about the engine? I'm afraid I don't have any numbers or anything for you, but it was posted on the main Irish VAG forum earlier:

I sold my Edition 30 to Skyways of Birmingham for a little over £3k after it was written off.
It was hit from the rear, and apart from a small shunt with the central reservation - the front end was ok. A bit of cosmetic damage and a smashed xenon - but the engine was still running fine!
Had done 7500 miles, was run in carefully for the first 1000 miles, and was rarely thrashed!!
Sack paying £5000 for a new engine

Was the car standard, or had it been remaped or owt? And how often did you pull your dipstick to check the oil level?
-
Crap news mate.
Hope it works out for you
-
Why not just fit a new turbo, change the oil, and see if it runs.
You might be lucky.
-
It's probably a really stupid question, but can't you claim on your insurance policy or something?

Sorry, but had to highlight that!
But in all seriousnous - 'mechanical' failures are generally not coverd on 'insurance' policies required to drive (or) keep a car on a public road. But if you have a 'warranty' - then this is what these are for - mechanical failures. :smug:
HTH
-
when you say came into full boost, are we talking a bit of a thrashing, and if the car was remapped or modded no doubt that will change the warranty.

Agreed. The Sale of Goods Act states something like: :nerd:
must last a "reasonable" period of time
(Rhyso, perhaps you can get your SWMBO to confirm the exact phrase of the SoGA?)
Now as far as I am concerned, whilst 70k miles might seem high, engines should really last double that. But the crucial bit is the two year old issue - that clearly is WAY SHORT of a "reasonable" period of time!
However, a massive caveat - we still don't know the FULL history of the car! Had it been remaped or modified in any way? Was the oil level never checked between services? Was the car thrashed when cold? Was the car thrashed just before being turned off?
There are so many important 'unaswered' questions which really need to be addressed - before we all start slagging off the stealer, or slagging off VW UK, or indeed slagging off the OP! :lipsrsealed:
-
Popped just as it was coming onto full boost,
Engine coolant temperature?
Throttle position?
Engine revs?
Loads of smoke came out of the back of the car. No warning lights no nothing.
The turbo is just a simple mechanical device, and has no 'electronics' monitoring it, so will never create a DTC or ping a warning light. :nerd:

Agreed!!
