Title: Brake pad help please.
Post by: Horney on 26 August 2009, 09:52
I'm after some brake pads for the track slag before the weekend (so I can bed them in before tuesdays trackday). I've been in touch with EBC for some yellow stuffs but they seem incapable of deciding which pads will fit my car and it's driving me nuts! All I want is a set of fronts that fit the later 16v brake set up. If anyone knows the EBC part number for the yellows that would be a huge help!

Either that or suggest some alternatives.

the ferodo ds2500's on mine are great, but are the only performance pads ive tried so cant compare to others. they are quite dear but last ages! the disc brake is wearing just as quickly as the pads

Well I looked up the part number for the correct green stuff pads for the car and emailed them back saying "These ones but in yellow stuff!" Hopefully that'll sort it.

How much were your pads mate and where from? I get a discount on EBC stuff and the yellows seem to be well loved by the ring guys which is why I'm at the moment going for them.

Sctratch that, just had an email back saying they don't do yellow stuff for my brakes. Rubbish.

So suggestions folks and I need to be able to get em delivered by saturday or pick them up from somewhere like GSF or ECP during the week.

I looked up your pads mate and they're near as dammit £100 which is a bit over my budget!

Trying to find some Mintex Xtreme's (which is what I have now and love them) but google is not finding me any!

From personal experience EBC reds and Yellows take too long to warm up if you drive your car on the road. Plus i have found EBC quality a bit dubious - brake pads falling apart.

I now use Mintex 1155 pads, good straight from cold, excellant when hot, last a fair while and no quality issues yet.

Also heard good things about the Ferrodo DS2500's mentioned earlier but not tried them.

If you get really stuck good OEM pads should work OK on your lightened car, I have done a trackday or 2 on standard pads without any problems. You do notice the differance but not enough to ruin your fun. Take a spare set with you as well just in case.

Have fun at Silverstone - wish I was going.

Mintex Xtremes are no longer available - the replacement is Mintex 1155.

Cheers bud, I have a spare set of used OE pads for emergency get home usage so perhaps bunging on some Pagid FR's from GSF might be the way forward.
I'll look into those Mintex ones you have mentioned as well.

I replaced my TRW OE spec front pads with, errrr TRW OE spec front pads.  The last ones did a couple of years, although I doubt these will last that long!

I really would echo Paul's view on this - good quality OE spec, on good discs should be plenty good enough, provided they're bedded in properly.

Where's that data from?

Someone trying to sell Mintex pads?

Or is it TUV data or similar?

It's useless unless you know the source.

If it's supposed to be from Stealth then you need to sort the link, as it doesn't work.

Chillout Mr. Questions.

If memory serves it was from PVW. The link to stealth was just for pads for someone IIRC, click into the thread to understand the context...

Nick ebc green will be fine, you need to be very much the seasoned track day warrior or a racer to bother with anything more extreme that needs a lot of heat, if you typically do half a dozen flying laps followed by a cool down lap. At our level of track experience in relativly slow reasonably light cars, crazy brakes is overkill, and more extreme pads are not ideal for road use and getting to and from the track either of course. I have Also heard that the pagid fr pads are also very good....
If you do go for the ebc pads, don't fit the anti vibration packing or whatever it's called behind the pad, as I'm told this can cause the pad to wiggle about!

I ended getting the Mintex 1155's on Paul's recommendation, should arrive tomorrow.

I'm currently running Mintex Xtremes and have found them to be outstanding from cold (Much better than the green stuffs on the Rado which has the same brake setup) and these 1155's seem to replace the ones I currently have.

are these suitable for road use?
If they are purely for road use go for the mintex 1144's or stick with proper oem ones
