Title: VR6 radiator fan switch/keep car cool at low speeds?
Post by: SamVR6 on 25 August 2009, 19:38
Is it possible to run a separate wire from the fan via the the battery into the car so i can control the fan manually? my thermostat is knackered and due to previous owner neglect/bodging it looks like quite a big job to replace (cylinder head removal etc) so i need a cheaper less hassle option to keep the car cool at lower speeds and when stationary if any has any suggestions how i could do this, it would be much appricated.

You could but the thermostat alows water to flow around the radiatior, if thats stuck closed or part open you have yourself a time bomb.

Edit : You could buy one of these - http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/product.php?xProd=5587&xSec=129 ??

Why would you need to remove the head?

Why would you need to remove the head?

+1 thermostat is from memory easy enough to do.

if you know you have a prob with the stat change it!  if its blocking the system, it will build up pressure and cause more serious engine problems e.g. blown head gasket.  It shouldnt require head removal to change a stat.
back to the idea of running a manual switch though (its a usefull thing to have when sat in traffic)  you need to locate the fan switch (which is normally on the back of the rad)  find the wire that goes controls slow speed, chop this wire and join an additional wire into it (so you have 2 wires going to the slow speed connection), then solder and sleave it.  Run this wire into the cabin and to a switch.  run another wire from the battery (make sure itsd fused!) and run this also into the cabin to the switch and hey presto you have a manual control over the fan, aswell as the original slow speed function.

The guy who mot'd the car claimed that due to the fact that the bolts holding the thermo in place were not only very worn but had been rounded off and that if they snapped whilst replacing/removal it apparantly makes the job a lot harder + the thermostat itself appears to be covered in mastik?!? God know what previous owner has done
