Title: Cost to replace a turbo?
Post by: 6sr on 24 August 2009, 09:30
I've been advised by my mechanic that my turbo is on its way out.

How much is a new or reconditioned turbo going to cost me for my 110bhp non PD model and how long do you reckon it'd take to replace?

Its been looked over by a guy who previously the foreman for the local VW dealership for years, he works on all my cars so I have faith in what he tells me.

Its going into limp mode everytime I hit 65 - 70 mph, I re-start the car and its fine until I reach that speed again.

Its been checked on vag com and it says its overboosting. Also, its got a pretty comprensive service history and there's no mention of it having had a turbo previously - its currently a few hundered miles off 150,000 now.

Variable vanes are fooked  not sure how much a turbo would cost second hand but a new one will be £500-600 and around 4++ hours to fit.
why not get a price of your mechanic

Cheers, I'll get a price as I think its probably worth spending the money on it.

You've always got the option of having the turbo refurbed, it's not cheap, but deffo cheaper.  But it's weather you want to risk paying someone to refurb it and them find it's knackered, but my guess (and it's purely that) is the vanes have got gunked up.

also depends how far gone the turbo is - some units aren't suitable for refurbishment

I'm going to get the car booked in to get looked over again.

I can get my turbo reconditioned for £185 plus VAT or replacement reconditioned turbo for £350 plus VAT. I think it might be worth spending the money on it as the cars great apart from this.
