Title: New Performance Exhaust Manifold
Post by: Judderi on 09 September 2004, 14:16
Just got in my car at lunch and it sounds terrible. I think the manifold needs replacing. Anybody recomend anywhere for performance manifolds? Its a 16v with a 2.0 conversion engine.

Why you think it's the manifold ??

As for performance one's there's nothing wrong with the Veedub item - but there are different variations you can get for more performance, I think a 50mm inlet is the one most people step up to.

I mean the exhaust manifold not the inlet manifold.

the standard exhaust manifold is pretty damn good for a standard one too ;)

why dont you have a look at the manifold first before you spend money, they can usually be welded back up

Whoops !!! Got inlet manifolds on the brain today ...

As veedubgti16v says see what the damage is first - could just be a gasket or even a fooked heat sheat making some funky noises.

Aftermarket manifolds do flow better - but I've heard you really have to run uprated engine mounts or risk them cracking. PLus they never have the right fittings and I can't stand bodges !!!

tsr sell the manifolds. try them..... tsr performance (http://www.tsr-performance.com)

they list the prices on the website..... they do them for uprated engines.

if you want a new manifold without doing engine mounts etc then get a mild steel one. it wont put stress on everything its joined to like a stainless one. and get it all heat wrapped too

I've recently fitted a TSR stainless manifold to my 1.8 16v, is this likely to put the exisitng engine mounts under any more stress then what the old manifold would have done.....??

(I did change the front one with like for like about 2 years ago) :)

Found out that its actually the downpipe thats gone.

andy mc, what they mean is that stainless manifolds are more brittle than mild ones so with the original engine mounts the engine can move alot more which could (and often does) lead to the manifold cracking. with uprated engine mounts the engine moves less so reduces the risk of puttin stress on the manifold, not the other way around. hope that makes sense....

Gtijoe, yes it does, thanks  ;)

To be honest I'm not really 100% happy with the current front mount I've got (bought from Euro car parts for about ?30) and is actually the second one I bought from them, the first one felt knackered from day one so I took it back and got it replaced.

For safteys sake (and the cost of a replacement mainifold) I mite just get on and buy an uprated mount.

Can I get away with just changing this one or will the rear mount near the gear box also need uprating aswell.......... ???

Yeah good question. Ive decided to change the whole manifold as this will incorporate the downpipe. I have a vibra technics front mount but standard back mount. Will this be ok for a stainless manifold?

16V front pipe..... ???????? best bet is to replace it with an aftermarket system, and if you are getting a garage to do it, make sure they have done the work before, the garage I took mine too took 6 hours to replace my front pipe with a genuine VAG item  :o only didnt break the bank because I got very discounted mates rates  ;)

Awesome do a 16v stainless manifold for ?235. Think i will get this and get my local quick fit to fit it! They quoted ?50 to fit it. Or take it to my mate the biker mechanic and he will do it for about ?20 but there i have to put up with him shouting and calling me sunner!  ??? :)

?50.............. :o

My mechanic charged me ?120 (3 hours labour) as you've got to take off the inlet manifold to gain access.

Taking off the inlet isnt a big job. Think you was robbed! My mechanic is great, he did a full rebuild of the head after i bent the valves and only charged me ?50!
