Hey all,
I have a 1998 (R) 2.0 8v Golf GTI.
It is a blood red colour, but I cant identify the actual colour code as the sticker in the boot is missing...
It isnt the same red that came on the colour-concept, because my friend has one and mine is a lot deeper/darker.
Its still a flat, non-metallic colour... Ive looked on boneybradley.webs.com (very awesome website by the way) and the red colours used on late MK3's were:
Flashrot
Classicrot
Hot Chilired
Any ideas anyone?
-
Should be in your book.
-
Yeah I know, but just says RED in the v5 logbook and I don't have the original manual....
-
Ok,
Could you post a picture of your motor?
-
Tornado or Flash red maybe.
-
I know it's not flash red, coz I bought a flash red bonnet and grille... It's much lighter than the rest of my car -doh!!!
Gonna take some pics in the morning and will post them up.. Hopefully the colour will come accross correct on the computer/digital camera.
Has anyone seen Classicrot (classic red) in the flesh? That's what I'm leaning towards.
Thanks again for the help so far!
-
The reason why the bonnet was lighter is that it will have faded, non met red I believe can only be flash or tornado, maybe it has been resprayed,
-
Hey!
The bonnet is definitely a different colour.. It will have faded I agree, but you can tell it didnt start out life the same tone.

-
All colour concepts were the same red which is why I suspect your's may have had paintwork.
-
Hey Wayne!
Mine isnt a colour concept, its my friend that has one.. When its parked next to mine, its the same colour as my bonnet, but not the rest of the car.
I think you may be right though with Tornado Red. Ive been looking around and that is the closest match to mine.
Gonna buy some Tornado Red paint and check it out...
Thanks for your help dude!
-
Where did you look for the sticker?
A mate of mine looked for the sticker in his boot, assuming it would be stuck on the rear panel, but I found it underneath the carpet next to the spare wheel..
-
think im right in saying that they stopped tornado red in '94 for the mk3?? and it became flash red

I think that is right, later ones were flash red.
-
Yeah, from the information on http://boneybradley.webs.com it says Classic Red and Flash Red were the only solid red colours in production in 1996-1998.
Mine definitely isnt flash red, so it should be Classic Red.. Arghhh this is a nightmare!
Ive pulled the spare out and lifted all the carpets up in the boot, but cant find the sticker.

Cheers Shepgti... I think mine must be Tordano Red, but I agree the number wasnt in production in 1997/98.
This is so strange... Need to find a Tornado Red in the flesh and compare!
Thanks again everyone for the help on this
-
Maybe it is Tornado Red and was sat around a while before it was sold.
-
Well it turns out we were all wrong!
Last night I stripped out my boot liner and finally found the colour code sticker!! It was right at the back of the boot!
The code is LQ3A - Monza Red. I cant find much about the colour on the Internet.... Strange eh?
What ya think?
-
Maybe it is an import as I have never heard of monza red.
-
Yeah, unless it was a customer specific order?... Ive searched LQ3A - Monza Red and it is definitely a VW Colour.
How would I know if my car is an import? It doesnt say anything on the V5
Here are some pics of my car:

Never seen monza red before.

-
Thanks WAYNE... As you can see from the seconf picture - the colour is slightly different on the bonnet. The bonnet and grille was taken from a Colour Concept (Flash Red) with no fading.
I feel pretty special MONZA RED!!!!
-
intresting, seems a mix of flash and tornado

Yeah I know - see how I was easily confused?! So wha do ya think Shepgti? Import or Customer Specific?

I would say import as I cannot see anyone ordering it in a red that is not much different to flash.

hard to say really either someone wanted to be cool and wanted a rare colour and paid through the nose to have monza OR its had a full re-spray recently and they used the wrong red (i know alot of mk5's are monza) OR its an import but i reakon you would know if it was
-
UD registration is Oxfordshire, the sticker in the back window is a dealer in Perth, Scotland so it has travelled around a bit.
-
Yeah I bought the car from a guy in Scotland...
The sticker in the boot looks like the original VW Sticker and is aged enough to be original, with LQ3A printed on it.
I dont think it has had a full respray, because the paint looks like it has aged for about 10 years (scratches, surface rust in usual places) but all looks totally original... Theres no over spray anywhere either..
Im gonna ring VW again and see what they say. Such a bizzare situation and a pain in the ass as any replacement panels will always need a respray!
At least I have something semi-rare!
-
It could still be an import.
-
Yep you might be right Wayne... It doesnt say anything to indicate its an import on my V5, but hopefully VW should know.
At least its an official VW colour - so should be able to get some paint for my bonnet/grille/rusty door respray!
Thanks for all the help guys!
-
Just a thought, but being an R-reg means it's one of the last Mk3's to be made. Is there a possibility they used this colour on the last batch of Mk3's for some stupid reason?

Good point, was monza red a mk4 colour does anybody know.

Ahh thanks shepgti! I think this could be a great explination to this "conundrum"....
Monza even sounds cool - I'm petty happy about my "mongrel" mk3!
-
 this is my wife car in my sig :)
-
i also have a mk3 on an R plate, my paint code is lq3a monza red
-
I also have a Monza Red MK3 on a R98.
These were not an import and were the last 250 cars off the production line.
I also had the problem of matching my panels as the flash red ones were a bit off.
We are special

What you doing with that nice FLASH RED bonnet now ? :smug: is it going on sale
-
I will need to add that monza red lq3a to my web site (I know it dosent have every colour as there were some special colours used within the mk3's life but no where seems to list them...I paste it from
dodgy old dealer info )
-
lol i feel special now
maybe for sale now as well
-

Maybe? Worst decision I made was selling my mk3!!

yeah maybe, need a more sensible daily, moving in with the gf and the commute to scarborough every day is costing too much in fuel plus the roads arnt the best for a low golf! going dirty diesel i think, although might keep the mk3 for weekends etc if i can convince her to get rid of the paxo vtr.
LOL driffield is driffield :lipsrsealed: my gf's dad lives in selby actually, nearly lost my sump on the speed bump near the luttle hump back bridge there a few months back!
