As per the title! I was just wondering if the RNS510's you buy off ebay etc work with the mk6 - because of the climate control display coming through the stereo?
Is it the same unit as on the mk5, or is there a new special Sat Nav unit for the mk6?

Yep,
mines comes uot my former GTi V, i updated it with the 1100 firmware (i have the RNS510 A-version) and the climate is visual on the RNS display, even the PDC behind en front are visual, so no problem

Thats good to hear - thanks. Pardon my ignorance, but what is the A-version? Also, how do you upgrade the FW? Is it simply putting in an update disk or something - and where do you get this?
Sorry for all the questions, but this is the difference between me speccing a factory one or retrofitting my own!!

I retro fitted mine in the MK5. and recently just upgraded the firmwear too. There is a chance of crashing and burning out the unit but I followed the instructions exactly and all went well.
I will also be taking my unit across to my MK6 aswel so will keep you posted too. Good to see the unit works with the climate and other new functionality too

We have just done this and I'm told everything worked perfectly.
Just one word of warning though. We had a customer who had bought a unit from ebay and asked if we could install it. We did (pointing out that it won't be warranted of course).
Basically it turned out to be an exchange unit that had somehow made it's way out of the VW parts warehouse in Dordon and onto ebay. When you bear in mind that the cost to (supply only) a genuine RNS510 through a parts department is close to £2k, you have to wonder why people will offer them on ebay for a couple of hundred....
IMHO, the only safe bet is to either transfer an original from another car (as several of you have done) or buy a unit from a reputable retro-installer or even just fit a completely different unit. There are loads of decent ones out there now with ipod, bluetooth etc.
I can't see that a dodgy RNS unit will do much damage to anything if it does go pear shaped but personally I would rather let a company fit it so at least you have some comeback. (And i'm not suggesting that you should get a dealer to fit it ..... £BIGBUCKS)
Just my tuppence worth.....

Just out of interest, did you have to take the "hooky" sat nav off him? or do you let him run free?
