Title: Bloody Tug boat
Post by: VW BUSH on 22 August 2009, 19:20
Stripped out cam and timing belt today, as i wanted to test fit a MK2 cam and change the belt and tensioner.
Cam bearing number 3 is 29mm as opposed to 26mm so i need to grind it down which is better than finding out after i have coated it so i felt happy somthing was going right.......
Upon doing up screws on Aux belt/Crank assembly onre of the buggers stripped out, so i have fitted a slightly longer bolt but it aint great
Any one have any idea how much the Crank sprocket costs and is it the same as a MK2 cos i a have one in the Garage loft but it will be a Mission to get it down.

Bloody tug boat

Toyotec says that the mk2 gti cam is a much better cam, better suited to our engines than the lame ass thing in there now..

Got one cheap on here which is better than the one i have sitting around at home, but the new one has an unground bearing in pos three which is baffling me :undecided:
It has the same part no as the other PB cam i have but different bearing size?
Any way had old cam in my engine but found it to lower MPG which was bad for Daily driving but had a lot better pick up and more umpf now the old tug has been relegated by London transports finest i thought i would shove it back in as it was time for a new belt etc.
With regards to the bottom sprocket i am going to drill the threads out and re tap them M10 when i have it off next that way it wont cost me anything and i wont have to climb about in the Garage roof

Sounds about right
I will shove it up on the Grinder at work and grind it down to the same as the others, but i never had to do it on the other Cam which is ex MK2 (or is it :undecided:) so i am still puzzled a bit.
Now i am not sure if i done the water pump pulley up so i better get outside with my 6mm Key

Worth bearing in mind that they are treated I believe so if you grind it down etc to make it fit, it might not last as long as the others.

What do you mean by treated?
The Cam is Hardened , not sure if it is Case or through hardened although i can check that in an instant.
If it is Cased then you are right i will grind the hardness off but if it is through hardened it will be ok unless you mean it has been nitrided etc.
Still the head and bearing caps are Ali so they will allways be softer than the cam so i would not expect any wear in the remainder of the engines life.
I was planning to get it Coated with a high hardness/low friction coating any way just because it is red and i can

do you actualy need to grind the 4th bareing to make it fit ?   if you have no4 bearing you have a solid tappet head

N0 4 Bearing is 29mm dia and unfinished, bearing housing and cap are 26mm so three mm needs to come off
Head is standard ADY hydraulic tappet
