When at action last weekend I ended up buying a camper van and picked it up last night, I've been looking about but wasn't looking seriously until I saw this one and couldn't resist, fully restored and it's a little belter. Apologies to jv for nicking the links but I'm really not a camera person, let me know what you think :)

i know i've already seen it in the flesh and everything, but those brakes still make me do the sex wee :D
-
Yea looks good.
I know some people down in Brighton that are into Vans, too far to be any useful help but very good on the advice etc. At least two of em are re-doing their interiors this winter.
-
Looks fantastic, 8) the missus is trying to get me to buy one.
If I could afford something like that I'd jump at the chance ;D
Go on tell us how much it was ;)
-
lol@top ;D
Len: Thanks for the info if I need anything I'll give you a shout. :)
Piggy, really can't say as it wasn't cheap (if you'd been to action at the weekend you'd know :)) but it has just about been re-built with no expense spared, I wanted a splitty really but they are silly money when fully restored so lets just say I've had to extend my car loan for another few years ;)
-
Yea for a splitty u are looking at ?8k min and a Samba ?12k plus.
A bay that needs resto can be bought for 3 - 4 grand. Would have thought gibby must have parted with about ?6k.
Am i close?
-
I wanted a Samba but as you say they are top, top dollars, the one I bought is a dormobile and these are the next ones for the price hike because the splitties are getting so expensive so I'll say I'm keeping mum Len? ;)
-
he'd be close if it was an ordinary resto' job, personally i reckon you got a bargain (even though you claimed to be feeling faint and suffering chest pains for several hours after :P ), but trust me this thing is IMMACULATE, totally custom 355mm drilled front discs (the only camper known to have anything like it) porsche 911 front seats, complete two pack paint interior (none of this hand painted nonsense) oh and lets not forget he bought it off a guy who is a proffessional upholsterer, perfectly trimmed interior throughout ! engine bay is clean as a whistle too
-
That means he paid more like ?8k
If it was more than that he was robbed. ::)
-
Ohh I don't know. Top money for a top motor. 8)
If he bought a cheapy and did it up to that sort of standard it'd cost alot more
-
Well i dont know how long he's been looking and where but i been looking/thinking about a year now coz its a toss up between a buggy or a van for me and prices i just quoted seem to be the norm.
Any modification is a personal thing and just because a guy has put a lot of work into it, it doesnt mean the value is increased.
I would rather buy a mechanically sound and rust free body/chassis and do it the way i want it, than buy some1 elses ideas.
Anything is only worth what some1 is prepared to pay for it. Thats why ebay is so succesful.
-
Thanks for that top I feel so much better now and the chest pains are easing a little ?;D
If 8k is a yardstick Len then I definitely wasn't robbed and got myself a bargain ?;D Don't have the time, knowledge or expertise to do one up myself so had to get one made earlier in true blue peter stylee and as piggy said it could well have cost me a lot more to do one up so roll on next years shows ?;D
-
Gibby, dude, I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I've never really been into the whole camper thing, but that looks like one that could change my mind! That looks absolutely awesome, really very smart indeed.
I'm not going to ask what you paid for it, because if you were happy to pay the money then it is worth every single penny. I know I'm only looking at pictures, but it looks like a proper job has been done - people who tend to work in trades like that tend not to make hash-jobs of their projects!
Well done mate, look forward to seeing it in the metal throughout the shows :)
-
My thoughts exactly S11EPS, I'm happy with it and never thought I'd be into the camper thing either until I started going to shows. If the missus will come to the Newark meet with me I'll bring that down as well as my Golf. :)
-
Just fishing mate. ?;)
In that case i think you have got a bargain and a nice one to boot.
Happy camping and i might tap ya up for a cup o tea next Bug Jam. :D
-
No worries Len, I've got you covered ;) Cup o' tea, no problem, I might even supply the tea bag ;D
-
nice buy!
dare i ask how much!?? :-X
i have a mate that just bought a rattyish devon conversion for 750.. was in pretty good nick when i saw it though./
he's ditched the original kitchen and built an entirely new one from MDF.
he's also learned to weld.
they have great plans for it :)
i'm tempted by a bus or another bug (or a ghia.. maybe even a non convertible.. could always buy/do up/sell my way up the ladder..) .. . i want a project vehicle that isnt my daily driver :)
whats insurance like? .. esp if insured for low mileage?
oops.. just put a watch on autotrader for a cheap ghia..
-
No, don't ask how much ;)
Insurance wasn't that bad, me and missus on there fully comp, it's been lowered, uprated brakes and 17's on 5,000 miles a year for ?223. The mods to it push it up otherwise it would have been about ?150 or less. :-\
There were some top ghias at action last weekend some real quality ones, you'd have loved them. :)
-
the only thing i dont like is the price :'(
i'm looking for a sub 500 project thats barely MOT'd
-
All the old air cooled stuff is getting pricey these days even the rusty sheds are commanding top dollars but if you see something you like then go for it, you only live once :)
-
hehe.. i figure taking a shed and turning it into a deluxe shed will give some fun.. and more dollas for doing it all over again :)
-
'seer mate if thats the kind a money ur thinking of forget a ghia. Min ?3k for a wreck.
I saw an absolute rust bucket wreck splitty go for ?4k last year, no lights, some glass missing, no MOT.
All vans and ghia's are going for silly money atm.
The only cheap stuff is beetles.
-
i'm not in any hurry.. :)
i wouldnt expect to get a splitty cheap... a bay maybe.. prob a bit more than i can handle tho
shame i'm not into razor edge ghias.. they go for next to nothing
-
Have u seen that gold razor edge? amazing!
Well if u here of a cheap razor edge let me know.
Might be interested when the garage gets finished.
-
Gibby you B A S T A R D !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I'm coming to all the shows next year with a sleeping bag, a pack of bacon and some tea bags. hope the missus doesn't mind sharing Gibby!
Gav ;)
-
Gibby, that's quality 8)

Grrrr ... one of you gets a G60, then another gets a camper !!!
I can see that 'keeping up appearances' on this site is gonna be expensive .... :'(
She's a beauty gibby, and even if some people think you 'might' have paid over the odds it'll only go up in price!
Think of it as on investment ?;D
-
Gibby - are you going to bring it along in October? would be nice to have a cuppa in it.

^^S11EPS sees us getting booted from Brewsters car park if Gibby opens his doors for tea vending purposes!!!!
-

Wow that does need a good resto! Cheers for that Overseer.
And there was a couple of campers there too.
-
LOL watch it with those breaks, Hit em too hard and everything in the back is gonna fly into the front and hit you :P
Seriously tho! with those breaks your probally one of the safest cars on the road! they look like they could stop a camper on a penny!
-
Thanks for all the positive replies peeps :) The brakes are pretty good but I'd love to know what they were like originally. I will try to bring it down to Newark if the missus is coming and try not to get thrown off the premises for doing cups of tea for 50p :D If not I'm afraid you'll have to make do with my old scabby cab which is my first love :)
P.S. Gav, if you're supplying packs of bacon and tea bags I'm kicking Mickela out matey ;D
-
I'll bring steak and eggs if ya dont kick Mickela out!
LOL!!!
-
LOL - Oh decisions decisions !!!
-
vodka? ;D
-
And Stella?
-
Right so who's gonna bid the highest?
Btw what we bidding for?
;D
-
About who's bringing the most food and drink so that they can kip in my camper at the next show :D
-
err.... a wonderful weekend away with gibby in his cosy camper..... ;D :-*
-
About who's bringing the most food and drink so that they can kip in my camper at the next show? :D
I have a Costco card......and I'm not afraid to use it 8)
-

and so do i.....Hmm..RACE YA!
-
wow :o that looks the absolute dogs danglies. 8)
nice buy guys, it puts the wreck of a camper i bought last week to shame but at 500 notes i feel my heart will survive another project for now :D
im a little concerned about the amount of campers that will now be on the golfgti stand. first it was the attack of the cabs, now the attack of the campers ;D
-
As i said on sunday, its sooooo nice and youve made the right choice :)Have you got used to driving it yet?
-
Gibby my man, that looks absolutly stunning 8)
echoing the thoughts of S11HEPS earlier on in the thread, i have never really seen the attraction in campers. But after seeing a beautiful example like yours gibby ;) im well into em.
its the ultimate in cool man 8)
ooozzzzesss class, i love the retro modern thing on campers/bugs man :)
what a buy, nice 1 mate ;)
-
Vix: Respect that you are taking on another project and good luck, I just don't have the time, knowledge or patience to do one up :)
As I said on sunday, its sooooo nice and youve made the right choice :)Have you got used to driving it yet?
Drove it up the M1 last night and it fair shifts for a camper was well impressed but it does feel like you are trying to control a bath full of jelly but I love it :D
Marcus: I was the same as you until I went to the shows this year, they grew on me and now I can't wait for next years shows but the golf will always be my first love :)
-

actually gibby i have none of those 3 things either, i would 100% go and buy one already done if i had the cash to. i see so many dubs go cheap after people have put sweat tears and life savings into them. in my opinion its not worth it. if you can buy the perfect vehicle why spend 3 times as much trying to make one perfect unless that is your hobby.
your the winner at the end of the day gibby, u can keep it as it is or make it your own. either way it is a hell of a good looking dub and ur unlikely to lose any money on it if u keep it good. have fun :D
-
gibby, your gonna be big pimpin at the vw shows in the future mate 8)
the big question is........
whos gonna drive the camper, you or the missis? ??? 8)
-
Aye thanks vix had to extend my loan to buy it myself so an appreciating vehicle would be nice :)
whos gonna drive the camper, you or the missis? ??? 8)
Seeing as I've already gone over a kerb while driving it (luckily didn't curb the alloys ::)) I guess it's the missus, looks better if you're a chauffered pimp anyway :D
-
::)
certainley does :D
good man ;)
-
awesome gibby!!!! im soooooo jealous!!
Gaz 8)
-
Cheers Gaz, going to try and bring it to Newark if the missus will drive it down :)
-
would like that mate!!!!, should be a good old range of stuff to look at with your van there and s11eps bringing his stallion!!..
30 days till Newark meet!!!
Gaz 8)
-
Gotta see that Italian stallion and don't know if you know but tvr golf was at action last weekend and he's going to try to bring his project down, should be a quality meet, looking forward to it. ;D
-
so tvr dude is finished? :o
-
yeah heard he bringing it down, he was gonna to the last one in april, but things were delayed for him big time, that and the weather was shate!!!!!
hopefully weather can stay fine for this one!!! im still trying to locate a decent venue for taking pics!!!, the last two times we went to a big retail car park but 'chavs' are always there and would be nice to find some where quiet where were not associated with em!! then back to the pub for another shandy!!
Gaz 8)
dunno if he's finished i aint seen him yet mate, i know a few saw/chatted at action with him, i think even if it isnt finished he'll trailor it down.....
-
Talked to him on Sunday, it sounds quality what he's done, I believe he has primed the paint but can't decide what colour to spray it. This made me laugh cos he's done all that work yet can't decide what colour to paint it ?;D He's got tvr dials, red leather dash with stitching and cream leather seats. He's not online anymore that's why he's not been heard but he said he was going to send a CD of the build to Rich but I guess he hasn't yet. ?:)
By the way, the guy is unbelievable, he makes it sound like he's built a car with a meccano set, made it sound so easy! ?:o
-
I'm becoming a convert to campers. Was gonna build a buggy but after staying with a group of camper owners at Bug Jam i am beginning to change my mind.
Have kept tabs on the prices over the last year or so coz a lot of the people i know have them. And others on the RTTS egroup are looking at buying.
Now the garage rebuilding is underway i can start to think seriously about it.
-
why wait for the garage len.. you cant fit a bus in one :P
btw.. what kinda bus. and wat kinda prices are reasonable these days?
something like a bay panel van or devon would be nice..
not too fussed about havin all original bits.. as longs it goes :)
-
This garage i can - making it big enuff for any normal sized van. It will be 6.00m x 4.80m x 2.50m high !!
So i can fit a van in easily. :P
Depends on what ya want - just a van or do ya want a camper with cooker etc and bed/raising roof.
A basic van in good nick from about ?3k. Ya wont get much for less than that only hassle and heartache.
A good camper you would have to pay around ?5k.
Depends what ya want. I have heard of "bargains" but they need a lot of work. Lower body panels rust very bad and not cheap to repair.
-
has anybody said just how stunning it is.
simply stunning 8)

how many bricks is that then ? :P
-
Still haven't had the disc from TVR, hopefully I'll find it waiting for me when I get home tonight.
Thanks to Vaughn, Gaz and especially you Gibby, I now find my head turning everytime a camper goes by...........never done that before, what have you done to me :o
