Title: Carbs or Injection?
Post by: kraM on 21 August 2009, 09:30
Hi

I have been given a KR lump (yahoo)

with no inlet/exhaust/injection system (boo)

Is it worth the twin 40's route, or the find a big inlet manifold & injection system?

Is there a real power advantage to for a 4 branch manifold?  (I only ask this as I know that the standard cast iron 16v one works very well)

I know that a special bodge job is required with out one, but the cost difference is very tempting.

Thank you

kraM

I'm running a totally std kr lump on std managment in my MK1 and I'm loving it, plenty of power and reliable.  My downpipe was a modified item to mate up to the std 16v manifold and mk1 exhaust, works alright!

all comes down to you really, what sort of money/effort are you willign to put in, and how bothered are you about fuel economy!

Money = tight as ever
Fuel costs = my 1600 has always needed a fuel tanker in tow...

I know that the K-Jet system is about as good as a fuel injection system gets, with out all the morden day stuff [fit and forget stuff] (did the KR have a knock sensor?), are carbs that good, or do they go outa sync quickley?
Cheers

I would run k-jets, carbs need looking after and yes they can go out of sync quickly.

no knock sensor on the kr, about as simple as it can get managment wise!  problem is most of it is different so you'll need to source quite a lot of bits to get it going. some of the mk1 gear can be used but its not ideal. though if its a 1600 the metering head apparently supplies a lot of fuel, so might be good enough for the 16v, but you'll probably need the proper 16v air flap as its a different profile to the 1600 one. of course all the pipe work and fuel lines all different lengths too etc

If I can get my tow car back on the road, I may have found a complete front end write off MK2 valve, engine and running gear intact.  If so, anyone wanna baggsie anyparts I don't use?

I am keeping the rear disc/stub axel etc
The wiring loom/ecu/ignition thingy
Engine/'box
Injection system

Front brakes/suspension/body work etc will be up for grabs...

(If I get it, I'll stic it in the classifieds...)

The golf is a 1989 F, registared 01/06/1989

I have trailerd it home, stuck it on the drive and sat in once!

The O/S/F has been mullerd by a tree,
The interior is mint
The wheels are dirty but not kerbed (bottle top alloys)
It runs and has all the gears
Same colour glass all-round
Bodywork mint apart from the tree

If you need anything else, let me know.

If it is the right age, I'll have a look and see about the servo hose.
