im looking to buy a gti but indecied whether to go for the 1.8 or 2.0, your thoughts please
-
the 1.8 turbo all day long mate!
-
The only true GTI is the 1.8 Turbo.
The 1.8 non-turbo was called the 1.8 Highline in other countries. It has 125bhp It was only sold for about 2 years so they're all quite old now. The 2.0 has 115bhp making it even slower.
I would advise going for a diesel.

1.8T all the way!

I would personally go for the 1.8 20v 125 out of those 2, as it's a more modern, efficient & better performing engine (although VW dropped it for the 2.0 8v 115). They must've had a load of spare lumps they needed shifting, lol. :D

Dont listen to the idoits saying get a diesel. Its a GTI ffs. 1.8T is the ONLY engine to get in a MK4.
Whatever you do dont get the 2.0 as its a god awful engine.

Pmsl, i can't seem to get hold of a 1.8T in my area at the mo but i put those engines sizes up as there the most common in my area and theres a few (sorry for swearing) diesels.

ignore Alan - he's so dull he sold his MKIV for a MKV
what sort of mileage per annum do you do??
more than 10K get a diesel; less than 10K get a 1.8T
Simples

At today's fuel prices I think diesel wins in any situation.

I Reckon the 3.2 is gonna be best, the the 150d, then the 1.8t
anything else you might as well get a 1.6 none of the others go anywhere really

Well I'd put the 130d in 3rd equal. Actually the 3.2 is only worth considering if you dont care about fuel costs. You can gety some pretty decent other makes of car for the price too.
