hi
Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Eeek . . . I suppose someone has to eventually own them. How long have you owned it for - since the dealer finished with it?

To be honest, the folding function on the Mk5 is near as damn it useless - unless you only have 2" clearance on each side. From memory, you actually need the 'puddle' lights - these are in the bottom bit of the black plastic mirror support (which bolts directly onto the door). It isn't simply something you can change in any of the 'hidden settings'.

Noooooooo - please get it changed back to T&D. You really need to be doing in excees of 20k miles a year for LongLife to be viable - and even then, LL should not really be used on a petrol engine with a turbo. Have a really good read of this thread - particularly the first post, and then ask any further questions: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=65779

I've got the electric folding mirrors, as TT says there are close to useless as they don't fold in very far. You can fold them manually anyway, should you want/need to.
I do about 11-12k a year in my GTI and am having it serviced annually as per the T&D schedule, with an intermediate oil change every 6 months, using the LL3 oil.

I second that - I have electric folding mirrors and they are useless, you have to switch them manually (no key fob activation), and also at times one of them gets stuck on mine!
Its a pointless addition in all cars IMO anyway

You need a pair of folding mirrors, the 2 control modules (one fitted inside each door near the window motor) and the switch. To buy the parts new costs something like £600+, so get the parts from a breakers yard or ebay (if you can find them) - they seem to go for around £150-£200. The parts are a direct replacement for the parts already fitted to your car and they will work straightaway. I've done this to my car and the mod is well worth doing if you have a narrow entrance to your garage (like me). Alternatively, the best way to do it, is find someone who has them and thinks they are crap (see posts above) offer them some money and swop them over.

Completely disagree. I've driven down narrow streets with cars parked on both sides today and numerous door mirrors were hanging off. There were a coupla bmws with folded up mirrors who didn't suffer damage. I'd imagine if you lived there, having to fold in the mirrors each and every day manually would be a complete PITA.

I have the folding mirrors and always forget to fold them in before I remove the key, so I'd like to re-wire them so they fold automatically. Has anyone attempted this?

I had mine retro fitted and have to say i think they are great(with puddle lights) and i dont even have a garage
they are excellent if you go shopping and have to park in a busy car park or to be honest anywhere and before i had them i always folded them by hand wherever i parked as there are some sheeite drivers out there
got mine from ebay for £200 and had my m8 @ vw fit them for me,no coding,no changing of wires, just the 2 control modules and the mirrors and door switch!!!
