Hi,
I am new to these boards as I've recently bought my first Golf GTI (16v)! I've already had a bit of (costly) work done on it to replace the starter motor and work on the gearbox and linkage bushes to straighten out the gear problems I was having. However today I've created a problem myself as I think I immobilised the car when leaving for work! Not quite sure how, but I tried to start it and nothing happened. I tried again a few minutes later but again, nothing. I am no mechanic by any means but what do I need to do? Disconnect the battery?
Any help you could give me would be great!

Hi, welcome to the forum.
I had immobilizer problems the other day & a mechanic said the starter motor can solved a lot of alarm/immobilizer problems by spraying the thin wire connector (on the starter motor) with some WD40, i sprayed both the thin wire connector & the thick wire connector & then replaced & hey presto, it worked.

I tried that tonight along with disconnecting the battery but still nothing. I could get a guy from a nearby garage to have a look at it but any help anyone could give me would be appreciated!Cheers

Start with the basic's, have you got a spark and is the fuel pump running.

Hi Mate Depending on the make of the immobiliser you may be able to remove this by removing the dash trim (usually drivers side). Behind the steel plate should be the control box to the immobiliser. Disconnect the wiring blocks and try the car. If it's not there then it will be behind the passenger side instead. Some will work like this as I disconnected quite a few in my Green Flag days. Others will need the car to be started before disconnecting the immobiliser. It's got to be worth a try!!!!!! Cheers Deano
