I have a 1.8 8v GL and want to get a decent induction kit. I was wondering if it would be more efficient to add a chip with it to compensate for the different air intake? i heard that you could loose power with just adding the induction kit and not adding a chip to go with it, as the engine is tuned to the standard air box? if any one knows of any chips/induction kits that work good together or have any advice that would be great.

Save your money fella. Just get a decent panel filter and drill the hell out of the bottom of the air box. Costs you £40 MAX and sounds good.
You don't have to have a chip for an air filter, the reason that it can reduce power is because you are allowing the engine to suck in more hot air from the engine bay.

the big issue with the 1.8 is the spi unit!! a panel filter and save your cash for a 1.8 16v engine or a gti is far better value!

thats the thing i cant save for a better engine going to uni in a month, just made it look nice and run sweet so i dont have to spend too much on it when im there! i knew that drilling the air box and putting new panel filter in was an option, how would i do it? just literally drill a few nice organised holes lol

Hi, this is a very helpful page if you're going to attempt this yourself, it's dead easy and really very effective especially if you add a cold feed pipe. There are many variations on this theme in terms of feeding cold air to it but the principles stay the same. I also added a Aluminium grill to mine to prevent mice from making it into a home and to stop any other large debris getting in.

Good luck

I added a BMC Carbon Dynamic Airbox to mine with a Supersprint Exhaust and it made a considerable difference. Chips on this model won't do anything except improve fuel efficiency. Check them out: http://www.bmcairfilters.com/
