Yeah, what happens? Does it turn over.

I think the keys are coded to the ECU too, so I'm not sure if a straight ECU swap would work.

I take it you've checked for a spark ??

If its early 95 onward it does have a coded key to immobiliser! If it is an early model  then it's time for vag-com

lol sorry people, yes it does have a spark the ignition and everything else my mechanic says is fine. the only thing i can think of is to get it programmed. the car is a 96 model, the new ecu is also from a 96 valver. i wasnt given anything else with it. the guy i got it off just said it should be plug and play so did another vw specialist i was talking to earlier

You will need to get the keys programmed.

Post by: adamrob69 on 18 August 2009, 19:58
it is plug and play!! but it needs to be programmed to the keys otherwise the imobiliser stops it starting!! you need to take it to dealers get them to program it or find someone who knows how to do it with vagcom.

and i take it you have a valver? if thats what you got the unit off?

They are not plug and play.

As far as i know all you have to do is re-program all the keys to the ECU, nothing else needs programming.
Is that correct Wayne?

Post by: av_golf on 18 August 2009, 21:53
yes its a valver. how much would the dealers charge to get it programmed? has anyone on here got vagcom?

If not, C2 motorsport will de-imobilise the ECU for about £100. So i dont matter what key you used, or anything.

It's vag-tacho thats is required to code key's etc..not vag-com!

and regarding the plug and play bit...as long as the ecu matches the o.e part number (see list below) then all that needs sorting is the immobiliser
16 Valve ABF
91-94 Bosch KE Motronic: 0 261 000 852/3::8A0907404 (non immobiliser)
92 on Siemens Digifant   : 5WP 4 066 :::::::::::037 906 024 G
        Bosch Digifant    :  5WP 4 133::::::::::::037 906 024 AB
95 on  Siemens Digifant  : 5WP 4 237/304 ::::::::::::037 906 024 AE/BE

Who told you that??
You can code keys on VAG-com, i have  :smiley:

I believe that is correct as I looked at having it done when I changed the steering column but managed to swap the chip over.

Am I thinking of the later key's only? (I know my old mk3 one's were done by the local key cutter! and my passat wont/cant be coded on vag-com)

the old ecu has the exact same part number as the new one. is it just the immobiliser then? what vag-com do i need? theres ones on ebay for about £20, am i able to do it through one of them?

Not sure, should be able to do it with it to be honest.

Vag-com should be able to code all cars. I didn't think vag-tacho could do it, just mileage correction, but to be honest i've never used it.
What year is your passat? i can recode my Audi A8, and thats a 1998.
The older cars have a different procedure for programming than the newer ones.

by plug and play i meant that it would fit on the car without having to alter anything. But it would still need programing so the imboliser worked. (so not true plug and play perhaps)

all you need to do is program it. 1 hour rate at main dealers for about £60 i think mine was (which also included fitting)

a £20 lead of ebay wont do it, as they are not licensed properly from experiance, and you would need to know wat you was doing if you wanted to attempt it yourself.

You can code keys with vag com, but prob need full version and you need an skc/pin. Which can be retrieved using vag tacho, but if you plug in with that you might aswell code the key with it.

The leads from ebay will work, but you will need know how to register it.
Or you could buy vag-com 704 from www.chinavasion.com for £30, thats fully registered but don't update it!!
I think you will probably need the pin code, however i don't remember needing it on the Audi???

What i was led to believe is that the lead acts like a licensing dongle with the fully registerd software, which the cheepo leads dont have? but they will let you scan for faults

Only the newer versions need a lead with a dongle.
Earlier versions like 311 and 409 need to be activated differently.
311 with a code, 409 with a file.
You can buy generic leads that have a dongle but you can't update the software.
