How meany dealers will lead you to the GTI should you enter and ask to be shown a family hatchback ?
So what is it, a Family Hatchback or a Sports Hatch/Hot Hatch ?
-
f**k off
-
If you also wandered in and asked for a 'sports car' would you expect them to show you a Golf?
C'mon, let's put it to bed, the Golf is a hot hatch, the practicality of a family hatchback but with the sporty feel of a sports car.
-
I've never met such a boring bunch in all my days.
-
yawn
-
ok i'll bite.
a "standard" golf is a family hatchback.
a golf gti is a standard golf with a bigger engine, revised suspension, a body kit and some styling changes, but NOTHING that stops it from being a family hatchback.
therefore its still a family hatchback, albeit a hot and sporty one :)
-
Right, what bar steward voted for me.
-
yawn
of course... we should debate the finer points of steel grey vs carbon grey
or whether XDS is a "true differential"
or the best way to apply wax to our alloy wheels
let's face it.... this is all pretty sad!
-

I reckon you just opened your own flood gate there..........
-
I fyou walked into a VW dealership and asked to see a sports car they'd be a bit stuck until they launch the Bluemotion. The Scirocco is a sports car in namer but I look it and I can't even think of it as a coupe, nice car but really not a coupe.

what have VW done to the GTI which makes it unsuitable for a family wagon which is exactly what a golf is designed to be? (example: shopping bag hooks in boot)

Good question.
What have Audi done to the R8 that you cant go shopping with it, what about the Zonda, could get some bags in that 2nd seat or a small child as part of your family. What about the Veyron, exactly the same ? All nice fun family cars.
-
Try getting a buggy in the 'boot' also try putting a baby seat in (bet you can't turn the passenger airbag off )
-

Well, lets see...
It's too wide to open the doors in car parks...
It's too low to go into multi-story car parks...
There is little room for anything more than a couple of soft bags...
The suspension tries to shake your fillings out on all but the best roads in the UK...
You can't put the other half and 2.4 kids in it (unlike your average family car)...
You need to be fit and flexible to get in and out on a regular basis...
You need a left leg like Arnie to drive one in traffic (less so the R8 ammittedly)...
Honestly, if you'd tried living with something that qualifies as a proper Sports Car, you'd appreciate how good a Golf GTI is at being an everyday, family, shopping car.

See, now were talking, proper replies rather than no its not, yes it is no its not
-
Since the main question was whether it is a "sports car" or a "hot hatch", this poll is a bit unclear.
I therefore have no choice but to vote for the Planet X option.
Sorry Kev....
Rolfe.

More examples:
It costs you a fortune in either front spoilers (catching them on speedbumps) ir in jeans, as you wear the kneed out getting down to see if you are about to loose your front spoiler...
Nobody will let you out of a junction...
Kids with camera phones take photos - not a problem in its self, but when the parent ends up 'tailgating' you in thier Picasso (or similar) and driving like a tool just to get the kid close enough to get a pic...it's worrying...
Every time you drive a Sports Car properly, people you have overtaken seem to want to test their headlights...or wave their fists...
Hitting potholes can be uber expensive!

One other example but this times its a positive, you will infintely get more sex. I think.

Incorrect!
People assume you have either some form of micro-thingy and are trying to compensate...
Or that you are some sort of fat, balding, middle-aged, business man who is going through a mid life crisis...
(Well, 3 out of 4 isn't bad I guess...of the second comment!)

Now there's a point I was about to raise. Why the very low bodywork of what's really supposed to be a workhorse car?
I have relations who live on an island. Last Sunday I was visiting my cousin, and he started talking about cars catching their undersides on the ferry ramp. I mentioned once seeing a towing caravan being absolutely trashed by its owner trying to get it on the ferry, but I knew they'd reduced the gradient of the ramp since then. My cousin said that it was common for cars to catch the underside of the front bodywork on the ramp, and went to look at my Peugeot. He informed me that it was undoubtedly catching, and he could feel some roughness from the contact.
Well, I hadn't noticed and what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over. However, I have a bad feeling that the Golf Mk VI is even lower than the GTi-6. Am I condemned to park the thing on the mainland and travel as a foot passenger from now on?
Why the hell is ot so cool to have such a low-slung front spoiler, when it's downright in the way?
Rolfe.

Sorry to hear it, how long have you been unemployed?

Funny man!

I don't know about anyone else, but in my case of course its a "hot" hatch! For the budget of a GTI you could very well buy some alternative rides; new renault megane r26 r (the rollcage job) - dimissed as too impractical no matter how fast, a porsche boxster s/h, again, not much boot space....a lotus elise.....but the whole point of the golf is you get *most* of the fun of any of the above, a ride yer misses won't object too, room for junior & his mates, or room to take your bike out to the country for a spin. I think a lot of us here are long term fans ( this will be my 3rd gti), but like I say, I personally have never found a car that does all the things I'd ask of it so well
As an aside thou, isnt that megane thing hideous!!!
-
Im not going to be popular here!
The Golf GTI is not hot or spicy enough to compete with the Focus RS, Megane or Cupra R!
Its more sporty than most family hatch!
WARM HATCH???? :smug:
Strange that I still bought the GTI!
-
Not marketed to be any competition for those cars either though, thats what the golf R is for! Which is why all these reviews mean diddly squat in my opinion!
-
It is what it is

Hi all,
Recently ordered a Mk6, looking end of October for possible delivery. I have enjoyed reading the posts on this forum, so have taken the plunge and joined.
For me the GTI is what you want it to be. Although it may be grouped in what the industry calls a “hot hatch†the design, performance and practicallity of it means it is different things to different people.
For myself and my wife (whos car it’s going to be, if she can find where I hid the keys) its going to be a mix of practicallity, comfort with a little bit of fun thrown in. For me its fun, performance, fun, koudus, fun bye the way did I mention fun.
Did look at the Focus RS but after driving a second hand Mk5 (we were going to buy, but decided against it due to being an import with too much wrong with it.) we took the plunge on the MK6 for the reasons above. Also got a reasonable discount, plus scrappage.

It is what it is
Deep man

If you want a family hatch, then get a four door.
If not, get a two door like me

i'd much rather have a scirocco than a 3dr golf - but i need a 5dr -
can someone please explain to me the point of the 3dr these days?

For me, I dont have a direct family of my own so dont need a 5 dr. Plus I think a 3 dr looks a lot better.
-
I prefer a three-door because it gives easy access to the back of the car from the driver's door through the wider door opening. And I agree with Kev, I think it looks better.
I've only ordered a 5-door because I had my arm twisted.
Rolfe.

agreed... except access to the back is even easier with a back door rather than the drivers door!
-
Not if you're already standing beside the car with the driver's door open, which is where I usually am when I decide I want to throw something in the back.
I have a habit of putting my handbag in the rear footwell behind the driver's seat if I'm carrying a front-seat passenger. I don't have to open any rear door to do that. I doubt if I'll be able to do it in a 5-door though.
Oh well.
Rolfe.
-
fit 3 door seats to a 5 door :smug:
best of both worlds
(yes it is a pic of my MKIV but you get the idea!)

i meant what's the point of a 3dr golf over a scirocco which imho is a much better looking car (and with free acc)
if i didn't need a 5dr i'd have the 2nd scirocco of my car-owning career...
