Here's a thing:
You spec the Tyre Pressure Monitoring option, so you get a little light up if you are low on air...but what happens if you change the wheels to something aftermarket?
Does the light come on if it's not getting a signal?
Or remain out?
Or do you need to fit the factory supplied Monitor/valves to keep the system happy?
Basically I suppose I'm asking, if you want to fit aftermarket wheels at any time in the future, shouls you avoid a car fitted with the Tyre Pressure Monitoring option?
Anyone know?
-
How much does this option cost?
-
£35

£35
Not bad I guess.
-
Its not that sophisticated. It just uses the ABS sensors to monitor rotational speed and uses this (badly) to deduce whether you have a punture or not. Its only £35 so worth a punt but don't expect it to be that good.
Since there is no hardware in the wheel, you can have whatever you want.
-
For one it was standard on the MKV Gti and R32. Yes 35 quid isnt much but its useless. I have had two punctures in my R32 and not once did it pick it up, even when the wheel was rolling and almost flat. Save your 35 quid for some fuel.

In that case £35 is a bit steep for a little bit of software...

True, but it should be easily negotiated in as a freebie. Its an extra button to look nice at night if nothing else
-
except the button is located in the glove box that nobody can see!!
-
What's this?
So it's not automatic?
Or what's the button for, if not to make it check the pressures?
I'm confused. Can anyone clarify?
-
push the button to set the tyre pressure if you have a new tyre put on or whatever. This set's a record of what the rolling radius should be. If you get a flat then in theory the rolling radius of the tyre will be less so the ABS sensor should notice and flash the light up on the dash.. doesn't often work though by the sounds of it!
-
Ahh...got ya.
Thanks.
-
Oh that sounds very basic. I was expecting it to tell you if one of your tyres went 1psi out!
-
I don't know what I expected...but at £35 and coming from VW, I kinda worked out it wouldn't be very much!

My bad, on the mk5 the button is beside the ESP button near the gear lever, just assumed it would be in the same place. No point in it at all now...
-
it worked really well in my mk5 GTI...both times I had a screw in a tyre it sounded the alert and flashed the light in the dash when the pressure had dropped by a slight amount. Was very impressed. Couldn't believe it when the stealer said it was an extra £35 on the mk 6

Im pretty sure Audi do an option which will tell you the PSI of the tyre via a sensor but I think its something stupid like £350.

Here's a thing:
You spec the Tyre Pressure Monitoring option,
<Pedant mode on> It is now just called 'flat tyre monitor'<pedant mode off>
Because the system doesn't actally measure any air pressure, and has repeatedly been proven to be shyte.
so you get a little light up if you are low on air..
You will only get the light when you are virtually on the rims. This particular system which VW use only seems to detect any 'problem' when at least 2/3rds of the air pressure has vanished!
.but what happens if you change the wheels to something aftermarket?
Nowt!
Does the light come on if it's not getting a signal?
This particular system only compares rotational speeds from the roadwheel speed sensors (others seem to incorrectly call them 'ABS sensors' - but there is no such thing! :nerd:) - so even if you put four pram wheels on the car, the system will still think all is normal!
Or remain out?
Yup! :afro:
Or do you need to fit the factory supplied Monitor/valves to keep the system happy?
Nope.

Not an issue with the Golf5/6.
Anyone know?
HTH

What's this?
So it's not automatic?
The system is fully automatic in its operation (providing the system was initially 'set'). But it is just woefully useless. It is seriously unreliable - and if anyone were to rely on the system, they would be either extremely foolish, or submitting an advance application for the Darwin Awards.
Seriously, this particular system is actually worse than not having any 'TPMS' at all - because peeps think they can rely on it. Volkswagen should just scrap this system, and whilst they are at it, scrap their inferior ATE ESP system, and use the Bosch system which is considerably better.
Or what's the button for, if not to make it check the pressures?
The button is simply to 'calibrate' the system. So you should first check and adjust all four tyre pressures (when cold at ambient . . . . ) - and then press the button. The system then effiectively 'learns and stores' the individual rolling radii of all four wheels - and then uses this as a reference for future alerts. But the button should not be pressed willy-nilly, like someone on here used to do!
The button is also used to 'intitate' the system, but this is usually done by the stealer during PDI - but again, there have been reports where they failed to do so!
I'm confused. Can anyone clarify?
Any help?

That is how it is supposed to work . . . . .

. . . . correct. Its useless.
Just to give a few indications of crap it is (and just to clarify, I allways press the tit everytime I need to adjust my pressures, so about every other month):
Recently changed some very worn 225 boots on the front with some brand new 235s - so a notable change in radius - and not a whimper of a warning. Swapped fronts to rears - again no warning!
A while earlier, I had some Monza IIs replaced under warranty, and on the drive home, noticed the rear end very unstable, got home and noticed the rear tyres were clearly underinflated. Next morning checked the pressures - to my utter disgust, the stealer had ONLY put 22 psi in one rear and 18 psi on the other - so a serious pressure 'loss' - yet the TPMS failed to warn! To say the DP got a gobfull (for his utterly incompetent 'mechanics') was an understatement!

Nope. If you want that kind of accuracy - buy an Audi. Whilst my Audi (a B7 RS4) does not actually display the stored pressure in each tyre - it does monitor to that kind of accuracy. When I interrogate the specific module in vag-com, it displays each corner to one decimal place in bar - which is about 1.5 psi. But on the Golf, the control module isn't even enabled!

Yes, but at least the system on Audis actually works. On the Golf, say you get a puncture, the system fails to warn you, you continue to drive, and actually end up totally wrecking the tyre (wheras the Audi system will allow you to get the tyre patched without ruining the carcass). And being as you really need to purchase tyres in matched axle pairs - you then end having to lash out say £250 for a pair of new boots - not to mention if you are actually lucky enough to be able to get the Golf from lane three of the m-way to the hard shoulder, or havn't wrecked your Monzas in the process. And then there is the inconvenience of having to get two new boots as a matter of urgency - whereas on an Audi, you can run around on the spare, and get the puncture repaired with much greater convenience, and for about £230 less than a pair of new boots!

^ You make a valid point TT. Whats the crack with changing tyres then with these Audi sensors?
-

You can't. Well unless you did some serious hardware and electronics changes. You'd need an Audi 'central convenience' ECU for starters, install some radio recievers in each wheel well, and a whole load of electronics re-programming which would be way beond the 'long coding helper' in vag-com!
Just buy a decent analog tyre pressure guage, and use it regularly, and also use the good 'ole Mk1 eyeball everytime you return to the car.!!!
-
do you work for Audi, TT? cause you are seriously wanking off on their cars and technology today! you do realise this is a VW forum?!
