Gear box mount can rattle like a mofo under engine breaking
Does it rattle when you lift off the throttle?

Could be the engine moving on the mounts under load and rattling one of the exhaust heat shields.
Check the engine mounts as well as the usual top mounts.

Yeah you can but if it is not loose or damaged then it is somthing else causing it to rub or rattle like a buggered zaust mount or engine mount.
Unless you have an after market exhaust which is bigger and rubs etc.

I would give the engine exhaust and supension mounts a good check over first, in my opinion i would never remove a shield near the tank
But i have removed them from further up as they can drive you batty

Gear box mount goes quick if front/rear mounts are soft and does have a clear clicking sound, also look for polishing where something might be rubbing
Best to get under and see what you find probably somthing bloody obvious like half a fox
