Hi all
My Grandad was involved in a car accident this morning :sad: (he is ok thank god )
But the car is not. Its a Mk 3 Golf 1997. and needs a new drivers front wing and a new drivers door
I have a few questions please if you wouldnt mind helping me out? as i will be fixing it for him this week.
- how much are genuine mk3 doors and front wings from VW? is it worth just getting a patent wing do you think? (£19)
- can anyone recommend places to buy these? (or if anyone has a metallic green of either, ill gladly buy from you)
- The wing looks easy to remove. However, can anyone please help describe the best way to remove the door and replace? or point me towards a good guide?
- I will have to get them painted also. What is the average price to spray a wing and a door? any reccomendations on reasonable places in north kent?

Sorry to hear about that.
I would always say go to VW for a panel as patented parts don't always align up right.
I couldn't help you on prices but to get a wing sprayed it costs £80 ish.
Your best bet is to visit/call a breakers yard and see if they have any. That metallic green is called "Dragon Green" and is the commonest colour so should be available.

Check out Volksapart in Erith they can supply second hand parts.
Recon you will be paying about 100/150 per panel for a good job.
Better to source the door/wing and get it painted off the car then fitted.

I would get the parts from a scrap yard, wont cost you much more than a tenner each.
Is there any damage to the inner wing, or the bumper brackets etc? And where the door mounts.
Have you got pics?

I managed to get a wing and door delivered all in the correct colour from a few breakers yards.
I will be attempting to fit them tomorrow.
Does anyone have any tips or a guide on how to remove and replace front doors on a MK3 golf ?
The wing should be fairly simple.. its just the door looks like it could be a bit of an ar*e. Any special tools needed?

WE are so good we even have a quide for that one -
First off:
1. Open the door
2. Remove door card
3. Remove the grey stuff covering the door
4. Re-connect the window switch, move the window down unit you can see two 10mm nuts through the gaps in the door skin. Once loosened this will allow you to feed the window out of the door (tilt it to one side and feed out)
5. Once the glass is out, remove the connector to the electric motor and then FIVE 10mm bolts holding the window regulator in. Oncve these five are out, the regulator can be fed out!
6. So now you have your regulator and glass out. Remove the loom completely.
Now you can get on to removing the door. They are heavy though, so removing this stuff will make it a bit easier!
If the door you have has the hinges on still, then leave the half on the door where it is. Minimal movement on a hinge make all the difference in the lining of the door!!

I - This is a small cap which when removed relealsa a 6mm bolt. Remove this on both hinges.
II- If you have the older hinges, then you will need to remove these torx bolts - 45 I think.
Before this though, you need to remove the stopper (III) using a 10mm spanner AND the loom. The loom twists to the left about 90 degrees and pulls out. Easy.
The door will just lift off once the 6mm bolt is out (if you have newer hinges)
A few notes
The motor is on the regulator.
The central locking feed to the lock will be tight (yes toit like a tiger) so you may have to heat it up to pull it off without breaking something.
As for the lock, its easy enough. Make sure you have some good Torx keys/sockets.
The rubber window seal just pulls off and can be pushed on other door.
When putting the glass and reg back in, DO NOT tighten the five bolts holding the regulator in. Put the bolts in, but dodnt tighten them until the window will go up and down easily. If they are tightened and the window is not aligned correctly then the window will come down when you try and close it (because the window is not lined up with the rubber seal).

Also make sure no surrounding area of the chassis has been scratched/chipped by the accident, might be best to do this when the old parts are off, as if they are left (no matter how small), you'll get rust and have to have them off again to re-do it! :cry:

I dont suppose there is a DIY guide for a front wing removal is there? Im not sure how many bolts there are and wether I need to remove the front bumper or not

Most of the bolts should be at the top, just under the side of the bonnet. Very much visable.
Probably a couple underneath too where the wheel arch ends, and the opposite end to that, fingers crossed the bumper doesnt need taking off partly, or fully.
Just a little jiggle on the damaged wing after the top bolts are off might help you trace where its still looking secure.
Not seen a guide/diagramme as such myself, but be careful of the sealant used on the existing wing when you take it off, and make sure the new one is nice and smooth before you attempt to put it on, to get a good snug fit.

If it's anything like a MKII wing they'll be a few bolts buried under the underseal inside the wing. It's right pain finding them and the getting all the underseal off so you can get a socket on them properly.
