hi all,
since wednesday my car has been behaving oddly, basicly on sat i changed the rocker cover gasket, as the hydrolic lifters are making a noise i thought id have a look at it, after having a play about i realised that the oil splash guard was loose so i thought ye il take that out, so after driving around all of a sudden the car started to push me foward when i changed gears felt bit harsh, then the revs started to drop lower then normal down to 500 revs had to keep the car reved a little, yesterday i thought id clean the throttle body but when i took the air pipe of i found abit of oil just by the flap so i knew what the prob was. I put the guard back in and cleaned the body with carb cleaner, today it was fine till the temp got to 88deg the engine started to do the same, so got home cleaned it again, now what happens is that when i start the car it revs upto 2k revs and then it will rev up & down like im pushing the peddle 4-6 times then itl sit down to 1k revs and move upto 1400k revs then back down will not sit down to 900 revs as it does, seems like the choke is on, do you guys think theres oil on the elec bit on the throttle body? i ment to be going to dewsbury today from birm but its alredy killed my petty, iv even drove it hard to clean it out but nothing, it feels like its loosing power. whats the best thing to do? and where can i get the gasket from for the throttle body and the hollow intake? been gsf and they dont do the throttle body or the gasket,
car is a mk3 gti agg engine with 114k on clock.
sorry for long msg!

I dont know if its connected with your reving prob but I would put the splash guard back in I could be wrong but it may channel the oil onto your cam. As for your revving prob. make sure you have reconnected all the hoses, oh and that earth wire that goes from the battery to the edge of the rocker cover.

ye mate splash guard is back in, and the earth wire is connected but it was loose so i tightened it 2day il take it back of and put some WD40 on and put it back on so it has a better connection. im thinking the oil got to the idle stabliser so hopefully il take it apart tommorrow. thanks for that mate

The splash guard is to stop oil being thrown into or down the breather.
-
I'd say check the breathers first...for leaks and to make sure there clear!
-
checked them they all clear, but there is a little bit of gunk in there but nothing to block em, what could i use to clean them? carb cleaner?

ok ive done that took the throttle body of inspected it and cleaned it put it back together checked the injectors they fine checked all that i could, all good. but as its cold start does same but (keeps revving up and down 4 a few seconds) then sits down but when the choke goes off, it sitts just below 1k 950 revs but better then before but need to take it for a good drive, get the temp half way then see how it behaves, doubt its has been fixed, ive taken the battery of so the ecu resets, do i have to take it to a vw specialist so he can reset it? or will that be a waste of money?
-
if you disconnect the battery it takes about 10 minutes for it to relearn the engine! if it still misbehaves when it gets warm try the temp sensor (this controls the fuelling for cold starts but if they fail it can continue to give extra fuel when warm)
-
took it to my mechanic who said its the throttle body that needs replacing,
i doubt its the temp sender, iv disconnected the battery for 30mins but no luck starts up revs fly to 2k then slowly comes down to 1400 then sits on 1k and will sometimes go down to 900 revs but when im driving and comming to a stop the revs stay on 1400 revs then come down slowly to 1k revs and stays there. i know ive caused the problemas oil got into the throttle body.

will i need to get the throttle body re-aligned? got some1 comming out to me at 4pm, charging me £30 to do it if its not fixed then itl be £20
-
yes its been fixed. guy come out and reset the throttle body, it wasnt faulty just needed to be re-aligned so its all good. its sitting just where it ment to. am happy now
