Title: vw golf mk3 GTI Anniversary (Update: full black headlining!)
Post by: Toopay_MkIII_GT on 14 August 2009, 21:38
hi,
ive been looking on here for a few months now, but only registered now.
back in may i brought a mk3 golf gti anni.
its my second ever car, my first being a mk3 polo GT coupe which cost me £700 as a car to learn in at 17, over the years (now 21) i got into the dub scene and got to how it is today from standerd.
i brought the golf knowing that they weren't vw's finest moment in GTI history but a nice one came around at a good price locally. if i was looking for a golf mk3 from he start i would if holded out and spend more money for a nice 16v.

heres a pic of my old polo GT last summer..

and heres my new 96 deep Perl effect 8v anniversary after a polish last weekend..

the alloys are shot tbh which i hear is a common thing for the RXII's, so they will be getting refurbished in the next month hopefully
other than that, lower the front, needs a few bits of paint attending to here and there, new headlight needs fixing and just upgrade the stock speakers over time.
ive been collecting early vento grill and headlight protectors for a conversion at some point.

im a big OEM+ whore, so i like collecting load of optional extras the car could of come with, so im keeping my eyes out for a cd holder, and headlight washer system like my polo gt had. the blankput rear parcel shelf support speaker, bascily everything that reli hard to get hold of, i want

hope you like the car, and il post any progress i make,
thanks,
liam

first i prepared and sprayed up the early spec vento grill i had from factory grey to satin black:

Standered
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff292/toopay01/DSC00225.jpg)

wire wooled & panal wiped:

3 coats of grey primer then 3 coats of satin black later:

 brand new balck vw badge:

then changed head lights, bonnet and grill:

than finishing touch... gti badge...

that was todays effort. was fun changing the bonnet on my own! dunno if that was brave or dumb! but was fine tbh.

other bits and bobs ive done

new rear black badge:

Hella colour magic smoked rear lights:

might notice that one of that rear lights has a crack in. i brought it like that anyways due to them not being common, dare i say rare! and picked them up for a costly sum of a tenner!

Sharan stubby aerial:

Prefer the Golf front end I'm afraid.

Love those rear lights, been after a set for a while now, whenever a set pops up they're either too far away or I'm skint!

cheers for comments, shame most people don't like the vento front end much. i really like the clean lines of the gill. must admit, if vento never came with teh early spec grill. i'd never do the conversion.

VR6-joe: surprised you dont like it,. didnt u have one urself? have u suddenly gone off them?

all this nice weather is getting me out doin jobs on my car at nites. tonight i set about fitting OE electric headlight ajusters
was rather straight forward, replace headlight switch for uprated one. altho to fit uprated one, i had to carve away at back of dash abit
(http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff292/toopay01/DSC00259.jpg)

then hey ho, nice new "busy" switch

had to just wack motors into lights and replace light loom, all plug and play apart from the fact i had to cut and change the plugs for the indicators. mine have square connections,. the new loom had rounder connections.
while i was messing about with lights, i changed the bulbs for philips blue vision bulbs (just crisp white, not blue really) and also changed the indiactor bulbs to silver reflecting bulbs, can see a slight difference

standered orange bulb

philips silver type bulb

pictures dont show it as good tbh.

really happy that it works, kool littel add on i think, surprised how much they adjust actually.
i think i should get my lights checked to see if the beam is true so im not dazzing oncommers. how much you think a garage should charge for that?

commetns welcome!
thanks,
liam

thanks, i expect il get them done in standered silver. or maybe a silver that stands out abit more. il look at some examples when i go to the showroom the referbishers have. im also toying with he idea with getting the rim polished with the nice silver spokes. but mite be abit to flashy for me. i like keeping things oem to a point!

drewGTI:  :embarassed:  yeh did bend slats a wee bit. but really like ti centered up, isnt that noticeable, along as the badge doesn't fall out!

had a good day with the gti today.  gave it a much needed wash, fixed the radio reception with arieal booster and fitted red pin stiping to the door plastics. why the anni never had these as standered i dont know. altho i hear the TDI annis in europe had them.

but i tihnk they are LHD only, so i would have to do mine myself.

Yeah, seen them inpro ones but yeah, LHD, couple people
say not had problems with them and look great, just a risk... I'm
going to couple VW breakers tomorrow to see if I can pick some up
I can do myself... If that fails just gonna get them inpro ones I think!

thanks for comments,
yeh good idea, ive seen a few people do it them selves on forums, just a case of plonkin them in oven for few mins to be able to eperate the glas from case, then mask up inner chrome bit. altho when fitting the electric headlight adjusters, i tihnk the inner chrome bit can be uncliped, and just spray black. cant be too hard, and must be far cheaper!

Yeah dead easy to do and with it being inside and
not on few just gonna use a brush and paint
the bits.

But if I can't find any tomorrow just gonna buy
them inpro ones.

brought this Golf_III badge off US ebay. such a cool badge i thought, as i always write cars down and MKI, MkII or MKIII. anyawys, rubbed off he silver which was worn, coat of primer and few satin black coats and stuck it on the car.

it doesnt stick out which is great, nice and subtle, wanted it black coz annis dont come with anything crome on them, its blakc or red really.

thoughts welcomb,
liam

have had a US spec center console with drinks holders and cubby hole for moneths now. only just found and brought the correct fitting bracket for it form US ebay.
few pics of it:

then relised it would need a gaitor, so brought new handbrake and gear gaitor:

new Vs old gaitor: tbh old one wasnt too bad

also found a bit of a find, rear parcel shelf supports with speakers:

havnt wired them up as they have a vw block type connection, not the spadere to spade conectors. they are Nokia speakers.

anyone know  much anout theses? or have them even

comments welcome
thanks

started taking out interior tonight. changing everything to black. got colour concept A,B,C pillars and passat grab handles and cabrio 3.5 visors. got proper black fabric spray for headlining. and other ebits and bobs will spray matt black.

one job i need to do while roof is out, is wire up the lighted sunvisors i have. i have a picture of the wires by the sunroof motor and light wires. dunno if anyone cud help me what i need to tap into to work the vanity lights on the sunvisors?

also! theres a screen wipe thing wedged between the motor at roof!!

i do have a loom of sorts with the visors which have plugs on, maybe it would help if i had a picture of that?

last week, i brought a golf mk4 sunglasses holder that goes by the drivers grab handle, took a gamble that it would fit, and it does! brillaint for 99 p on ebay from hong kong or summit. holes line up perfectly, doesnt look out of place either. it will be sprayed black and will blend in perfectly, quick pic:

will be doing lots of spraying during the week, and will hopfuly start putting back together weekend. while roofs out, going to replace arial base, as receptions isnt great and i brought brand new booster few months back.

also. while im typing this, the box im tying in keep jumping up few lines and i cant actuily see wot im typing, i have to keep stopping and going back up to check ive written ok, anyone know why this is?

thanks, liam

no, pillars were original colour concept pilliars, eg: they  are already made out of black plastic

The inside looks millions time better with the black pillar trims and headlining, they should have sent the out the factory like that!!

I was going to ask where you found the anni rear bench with headrests then realised they arent the original anni seats! lol

i like the sunglasses holder :nerd:

I know you've already sprayed the interior light black and done a really
Good job (better job than I did on mine) but did you know you can actually
Buy an interior light already in black so you wouldn't have the grey squares around the LED's?????

Looks really tidy.
Trying to source black plastic bits for mine, can't understand why vw never put the black trim in the annis, they did with the mk4.
What's the black interior light from that will fit?

Last post over two years ago...

With regards to the black interior light switch, I believe they came off the B3 passats.

Yeh the black light comes from a B3 passat. I don't understand why they never made the roof black on tw anni either! But then again if they had made it 100% perfect from standard then we would have nothing to do to them! And they would all be the same! I think you should deffinetly put a new VW antenna on!
