Title: Possible to pick up a 1.8t for £2000?
Post by: Madmax on 14 August 2009, 18:46
As above, i'm looking to sell my car in a few months & with that & the money i've saved, i'll have around £2000.
Wondering if this is enough for something half decent? back when i had my old MK4 2.0 about 2 years ago, i wouldn't
of even asked but now it seems prices are falling.

cheers

Sorry to hear that. What's going wrong on it?

I would say £2k is a bit of an ask really for a 1.8T. Need closer to £3k to pick up something decent that won't cost you the earth to get running right as turbo.jon has found out by the sound of it...

The A3's don't hold there money like the Golfs do though.... Stupid really as they are the same cars, but just don't have the cult following to keep the values up! Sounds like he got a steal!

I paid 1850 for mine 4 months ago.it had 136k on it when i bought it, now it's just on under 142k and has fsh. Needed new discs and pads, but thats about it. I had it remapped a few weeks ago as well and there's no problems. I spent about a month looking for it, but well worth it

You will find one for under £2000, i've seen them go on ebay for less than that. But i will advise that you give the car a good test drive first, check everything so you wont end up paying a lot more later.

Check:

handling - does the steering feel right? Mine needed a new trackrod because it had been bent in a bump.
any noises from the suspension
tyre wear (is it even and how much tread is left? If they're all on their last legs it'll cost you a couple of hundred or so pretty soon so use that to bargain)
all the electrics
the engine - oil, other fluids, does it run smoothly?
check the brake discs and pads for wear

Service history is important too - find out when the timing belt was changed.

2k and some change should see you right, I ended up with mine for £2380 with 18" Keskins, Miltek Exhaust, forge intercooler, revo stage 2 map with sps, silicone hoses, koni suspension, neuspeed shortshift and a fsh on 98k.

Keep hunting and if you check out your potential purchase carefully you could end up with a nice example for around your budget.

Happy Hunting.

I didnt realise A3s were that cheap or I'd have looked at them myself. I guess that's why VWs are so expensive, everyone automatically thinks of the and thinks Audi will be out of their range.

Not sure on that point, have seen a w reg mint one for £2750 a few days ago which when you think about it is a lot of a money for a mk3 Golf with a posher badge.

Even early ones are still fetching £1500 or more, your mate got a bargain.

If i get one in Feb ill be looking at £4k. Will be the best price for resale value (lower mileage) and will be a later model.

Wouldnt be comfortable driving around in a £2k MK4 1.8T, would be waiting for things to go wrong!

2000 "W" A3 is based on the Mk4 Golf not the Mk3??!!

It's NOT a 180bhp.... I would say 80% of all the Mk4 Golf GTi on Autotrader stated as 180bhp are actually 150bhp. The 180bhp came out in late 2002 and you tell a genuine one by it having a 6 speed box.

Don't believe everything Autotrader tells you!!!

I picked up a w reg for £1100.  It had 170k though.  It needed a few things for the MOT, they cost me £90 in parts, and a windscreen, which cost me £100.  I changed the bumper, cost me £100, and had it mapped.

It's now nudging 180k, needs a cambelt, MAF and rear wiper motor.  Other than that is solid.  It had a receipt for a gearbox rebuild and clutch.  The only other expense that I'm setting cash aside for is a turbo, then expect to get 300k out of it!

Cheers guys.

My next car is either a VR6, MR2 or 1.8t. Very strange choices i know lol!
I loved my old MK4 & having a turbo on it would of made me keep so it's
looking good for the MK4.

1.8T all the way for me.  Re-map and it's a performance bargain.

This is a complete joke. I can get insured on an MR2 turbo for less then a grand, but can't get insured on a 1.8t
with my current insurer, looks like i'm gonna have to go with the MR2. Which isn't a bad thing but i was looking
forward to another Golf.

I could change insurers but i'd lose some of my deposit, plus admin charges plus the only other insurer i was getting decent quotes with
was Bell & that was at £110 a month, i'm currently paying £65 a month.

You should expect to get a turbo car at your age with low insurance. It just doesnt happen. Reason - young people crash more and are more wreckless.

And VWs are more expensive to insure probably because the parts are stupidly expensive. It's not a sensible choice for a young driver.

The MR2 will be better to drive anyway. Dont be a badge snob, you miss out on some nice drives.

I can quite happily get insured with other insurers on a turbo but it's just this one bloody insurer who i'm with now.
Even changed my DOB to 1980 & they still wouldn't quote me. The Cheek of it!

A Badge snob. I'm not, i just really loved my 8v that i want another Mk4. Love the interior too.
