Hi, i am you picking up a 1987 Mk2 Gti 16v next week with the intention of using it soley for trackdays so it will be stripped/caged & coilovers/arb's etc. I am new to VW's & want to upgrade the brakes as i think it will have the 239mm setup on the front as its a very early 16v with small bumpers & quarter lights in the front doors. I have heard somewhere that can fit the Corrado G60 front brake setup 280mm ? Is this right ? . I want to keep to 15 inch wheels as the R888 tyres will be cheaper if i keep to a small wheel. What other options do i have regarding brakes bearing in mind my budget for front brakes will be about £500 max. I used to use my old M3 evo for trackdays & Ring trip & now have a E39 M5 so i really want to keep thje costs down on the Golf & do it on a budget. If the G60 setup would be ok what parts would i need ? I have a access to a VW breaker local to me.
Thanks Simon.

G60 brakes should bolt straight onto 16v hubs and will be fine behind 15" wheels,I'm sure someone will confirm this soon, you can get a complete g60 setup on eBay,I thought all the valvers came with 256mm discs on the front, that's what mine has and it's an 89/90.also if you want even more stopping power there are several companys out there that do disc and caliper conversions for reasonable prices altho 280 is the limit for 15" wheels.
-
early 16v's had 8v brakes so you will need hubs from a later 16v with 256 brakes and the calipers and carriers from a g60 to go 280mm. its a huge upgrade though, well worth it
ps your a bastard for having had an m3 evo lol, i want one!
-
early 16v's had 8v brakes
Well I've learnt sumink here aswell then!

Without hi-jacking the post, but is it possible to move the front brakes to the rear and have 280mm setup on the front? Thinking of doing the 280mm disc swap on my Golf soon.
-
I think i'd be a nightmare to move the fronts to the back, and rather overkill imo as 90% of the braking is done at the front. Someone correct me if i'm wrong tho!
-
the guys on the corrado forum have developed a kit to put 280's on the back. havent read through it though as i see no point as russ has said.

The later Mk 2 16v hubs with 256mm brakes are they fitted to any other VW models that might be more common in the scrap yard ? Does it have to be calipers & carriers off of a G60 Corrado or are they fitted to other models, i'm sure i read somewhere that some of the Passats had the same calipers/carriers. When buying braided brake lines what ones will i need, G60 ones ? Does the brake master cylinder need changing ?
Cheers Simon.

Have a look on eBay I know there are atleast two g60 brake setups on there at the moment, complete with everything u will need to do the conversion.
-
the hubs can be found on a few audis as well, but im not sure which models. im sure someone else can confirm
its the carriers that are the important bits and have to be off a g60, but i believe you can use 16v calipers on them
braided lines are braided lines, get the 6 line mk2 kit
you can change the mc to a 22mm one, which is the same on g60's and 16v's. the 8v ones were smaller

Imo definately buy a NEW master cylinder, its not worth messing around with a second hand one, trust me we went through 7 litres of brake fuild trying to get mine done because the freaking seals kept going on a second hand ones. Only like £50 on the bay :)

Thanks for the replys , what brake pads do most people use for trackdays, i used to use Performance Friction carbon metalic pads on the M3 & they were awesome with no fade, also a few guys i know use Carbotech pads but i'm not sure what is available for the Golf, i would rather spend good money on some proper pads that won't fade, i have never heard any good reports about EBC but i suppose the Golf is a very light car compared with what i'm used to so may work on a Golf.
Cheers Simon.

I run Mintex Extreme pads on my Track MKII and they're awesome but I believe these are no longer available which is a bummer as mine need replacing! I was thinging of going EBC black Stuff.

Yes deffo a new master cylinder not a second hand one !

EBC YELLOWS work well on golf

280mm front brakes can be sourced from Seat Cordoba 16V for definite, probably Ibiza 16V, but not the Toledo 16V (it's 5-stud). You *may* find 280mm fronts on 16V Passats, too. lowlier Passats certainly have 256mm set ups, which do just bolt up, same as the 280mm, except for rotors, pads and caliper carriers.
If you're stripping the Golf, in all seriousness, with 280mm front brakes, on Zimmerman rotors and good OEM spec pads you won't go far wrong and I'd be VERY surprised if you cooked the pads - 280mm rotors are big ole bells. Even with R888s on I've not managed to get any fade from my brakes, although I do drive slowly and like a girl, according to some people. My experience would be from driving 'ring, Combe, Goodwood and sometimes even on public roads.

I bought the hubs, calipers, carriers from a Mk2 16v 256mm brakes, the calipers say Girling 54 on them. I am in the process of cleaning up the hubs & fitting new bearings. I want to fit G60 280mm discs, i am still confused about the calipers as i thought i needed G60 ones but they all seem to have Girling 54 on them aswell. So can i use my Girling 54 Mk2 16v calipers with 280mm discs ?
Cheers Simon.
-
to clear on 280mm discs you need some caliper carriers from 280mm car the carriers are on seat ibiza/cordoba 16v (mine came off a ibiza turbo) golf/corrado g60 and im sure ive seen a set on a passat in a scrappers before
take a tape measure with you and start measuring discs
-
OK thanks, so i need to find some carriers but can use my Mk2 16v Girling 54 calipers , that will save some money . Would i use pads for Mk2 16v or G60 as i am running the calipers designed for 256mm discs ? Are the calipers for 256/280mm the same then ?
Cheers Simon.

not even close
but still a good setup
true bilstines are better :) just a pair of damers retail at more than most complete setups
-
the biggest difference is the carriers between 256 and 280, the 280 carrier pushes the caliper out enough to fit over the bigger disc.
You need 16v pads to use 256 calipers, but even then may need part worn/ground down pads to get them to fit over the thicker 280mm disc. another solution is to grind the slider pins down a bit, but that leaves you with less 'meat' on the spanner flats so you might struggle to find a spanner thin enough.
If it was me I'd go for proper calipers to save hassle, MK3 GTIs are a good source of cheap 280mm calipers in scrappys now, they're getting common. Just make sure they arnt the 288 ones, as they dont bolt up. Doesnt matter that they're 5 stud either, the calipers & carriers are the same. That goes for most other 5 stud VAG models, SEAT, Passat etc. Just as I say, make sure its a 280mm setup not 288.
You know what to look for though, the 280s are pretty much the same as the 256, girling 54s.
